I've not done it, but there are several companies that off bolt-in 9" axles for your car. Keep in mind though that the 8.8" axle can be built to withstand a ton of power, it's lighter, and the build will likely be less expensive.
my old bronco has a 9'' rear and they do have a weak point that took me awhile to solve.
I'm on my 5th rear in 7 years, kept busting the main caps off.... long story short is i had big time axle tube flex.
once the center section is out the rest of the rear cant weigh more the 40lbs, real cheesy thin sheet metal. anyway, a weld on axle truss saved the day but if you make tons of torque and can get it to the ground you can/will break a 9''....often.
another thing to remember is the 9'' has a super low pinion gear so your drive shaft will be lower as well.
Doesn't make much sense. Unless your consistently at the track, and chasing E.T.'s a 9" is really overkill. If price wise it comes out even, weight wise it does not as you obviously said. Your welcome to do what you want, I just find it a bit useless anymore outside of a track car use.
