I've not done it, but there are several companies that off bolt-in 9" axles for your car. Keep in mind though that the 8.8" axle can be built to withstand a ton of power, it's lighter, and the build will likely be less expensive.

Thanks for the info.

I looked into building up my 8.8 and the cost difference was almost none.

Yea, its heavier and its a little overkill but i will probably never have to fix it. I like the idea of a 45min. gear change too.

What 9" axle are you planning on buying? And from where?

for the 9", they are 31 spline moser axles.

yes, 500 for those parts. not including the cost for c-clip eliminators, gears, & install kit. then add $450 in california labor.

Comes out to about the same.

my old bronco has a 9'' rear and they do have a weak point that took me awhile to solve.

I'm on my 5th rear in 7 years, kept busting the main caps off.... long story short is i had big time axle tube flex.

once the center section is out the rest of the rear cant weigh more the 40lbs, real cheesy thin sheet metal. anyway, a weld on axle truss saved the day but if you make tons of torque and can get it to the ground you can/will break a 9''....often.

another thing to remember is the 9'' has a super low pinion gear so your drive shaft will be lower as well.

Doesn't make much sense. Unless your consistently at the track, and chasing E.T.'s a 9" is really overkill. If price wise it comes out even, weight wise it does not as you obviously said. Your welcome to do what you want, I just find it a bit useless anymore outside of a track car use.

so now your getting a N case as well?

im calling BS, there is no way that 9'' cost the same as beefing up your 8.8.
