if u listen carefully at the 3-4 second mark there is a screech type .. not coming from engine bay .. coming from underneath .. i'm thinking it's some exhaust flange or something .. sounds like metal on metal .. have another listen .. please ...

You starter is Failing and will need to be replaced soon

My car made the exact same noise. Once the car sat for a week and it went away for a week or 2 but the noise came back. When i removed the starter for the motor mount replacement and re-installed the starter the noise came back ALOT worse. I knew it was the starter going out so i replaced it with a rebuilt unit. Noise never came back.

$20 says its the starter.

SRT Handz,

ok that Barney/Jackson thing is scaring me !!! :laughing5:

I was thinking it was the starter .... not sure yet but I will try and look this weekend ...
I also noticed that my idle pulley might be going .... I checked the belt last night on the car and the idle pulley (i was able to move it a little side to side) So that can't be good either ...

Now, how difficult is it to pull the starter out of the car ??

I'm thinking of doing the Carlisle Penn. Ford Nationals in June and need to clean up my act a little (by that I mean - engine coolant, belt, STARTER (maybe) etc ....)

Want to drive from here to Penn (6 hr drive +) approx. :headbang:

Ciao for now
Ralph

I'm gonna start tonight with changing the Pulley, the belt and the thermostat .. I think I might get lucky with no "prestone" change .. it still looks clean and good .. nice and green :icon_salut: I know I know it does not mean it's 100% good .. but I think it;s going to be fine !

then we attack the starter ... I think for some reason the Pulley is causing that sound .. to be seen ...

ciao for now

FOLLOW UP ~~ Re: Funny sound when starting her cold...

Ok here goes ....

Drive Belt changed ... easy
Idle Pulley changed ... easy
Thermostat changed ... easy

NOW ... someone please tell me how the hell you take out the STARTER?
I can get to one bolt no problem .. but the other one ??? WTF ? :confused1:

Does not make sence to me that the bolts are located facing the front of the engine ?? I would have expected them to be facing the rear of the vehicle ... how the hell do I get the top one out of there !!!! ???? :sad5:

the only was to unbolt (and it won't even be that easy ) the pipe coming down from the exhaust manifold ...

HELP ..

thanks

Went for a test run ... all good .. nothing leaks and everything sounds like it should !
From the new thermostat to the old one .. little difference .. I hit the "N" now on the temp gauge.
I would imagine it seems normal ... everything cool. I know now that I have to empty out the engine coolant reservoir.
There is a flaky buildup on the side walls of the reservoir ... will take the liquid out of there .. remove it and flush down in the sink with clean water.

Ok - noise still there when I start the car ... seems like the problem is still the Starter ... darn ...
how to remove it now will be the challenge.

thanks Ralph

there should be three bolts. Two with the heads facing the rear of the car and yes the odd ball one with the head facing the front. It's been a while but I think you just need a few long extensons and a swivel socket. Start with your socket, swivel socket ant extensions without the wrench attached yet and fish it through the front of the car. I think go above the sway bar and under the motor. If you lay with your head under the crank pulley and your feet towards the drivers side wheel it will be easiest. with your left hand reach up over the starter and feel for that bolt head and with your right hand fish your socket and extension combo the way I described above. You should be able to see the extensons from where your laying but of course the socket disapears behind the starter...thats why you have your left hand crammed up there. Now holding your socket steady you can guide the socket with the tips of your fingers to the head of the bolt, attach the wrench and loosen. just hope its not real tight...it will take a few tries and a crampy hand but you'll get it. when all said and done only put the two easy bolts back in leave the pain in the ass one out, you dont need it I dont care what anyone says. I've had a few mustangs over the years and have never put that bolt back in. good luck

Removing the starter is tricky. Just make sure you have Extensions and universal joints.

Being persistant pays ... I got that mother of a 3rd bolt on tonight and the starter assembly is on the workbench right now !

I ended up borrowing some more extensions and a few more 90deg sockets ... this is the beast that got things out !!!
