gas cap?

i was pumping gas the other day and well i noticed i still have my original gas cap witch is like 14 years old..does the cap affect fuel pressure? wut is its role? anybody?

a faulty gas cap can cause the MIL to turn on. i suggest going to autozone or Ford and getting a new one, maybe a locking one at that...

every year when I have to get my car smogged they also test the gas cap. As far as I know it's still the original one. still good with 170,000 miles.

The gas cap on our cars will not cause the MIL to come on. They do not have a evap system.

my mistake. I was going off information the guy at pepboys gave me about 5 years ago. I didnt know why/how it would make the light go off, i just figured it was the way cars opperated.

True, the tank isn't monitored for escaping vapors like the OBDII cars. A loose cap won't trigger the CEL on OBDI cars. (94-95's) But on 96's and up, Chris, you are correct!

Why would you replace it? If there's nothing wrong with it leave it alone...

yup they test the cap here in ct for emissions even though I dont think it matters for our cars
