if they go under that means a HUGE shot to manufacturing here in the United States... without their strongest supporter prices will be forced to go up for those auto makers in the US who are still around. Higher prices for them means higher prices for us. the higher prices for us means fewer purchases...

If GM goes under, it wouldnt surprise me if ford isnt far behind.

And Ford remains the only company to still not ask nor take a single penny from the Gov!!!!

But they did take money from some private investors. They just couldn't stomach the idea of the Gov't nosing around in every aspect of their business.
At least they kinda saw it coming. They have been re-structuring for about 2 yrs. now.

im glad ford doesnt have to go to such desperate lengths to survive, they sold off four of of their eight brands, and they might kill off mercury, but ford seems to have their head on their sholders on this.

IDK why you guys want GM to go under... If GM goes under, I'll bet that Ford will be doing the same thing not long after. GM brings a lot of money to the US. What we need is the foreign companys to go under, not American made products.

OH! Don't get me wrong. I don't want them to go under. But, they have been livin "too high on the hog" for too long, more than Ford or Chrysler.
Too many car lines and divisions. What's has been and is being paid to their retirees in health insurance and such is just crazy.

In the future they are all 3 gonna have to slim it down some.

I planned on buying a new car this year but since this economic situation has reared it's ugly head, that is going to be set back a year or so.

GM needs to close a lot of things if they want to survive. They make the same car and sell it under 3 or 4 different brand names and that is killing them. If they closed Pontiac and Saturn and just sold everything under Chevy and Buick and GMC brand names they would have a much better shot at making profit. This would be bad for the employees who would lose jobs but GM is over extended in every market and this needs to be done as they just have too many dealerships competing against each other.

i dont want it to go under either, but gdtrumbo is right, all three need to slim done, theres alot of badge engineering goin on that needs to end, ie gmc acadia, saturn outlook, buick enclave, chevy traverse, and gm is the one suffering the most beacuse of this, i mean ford and chrysler doesnt have so many versions of the same product, and gm has quite a few that i forgot to mention, but all in all they need to slim down, now if only mitsubishi and honda could bite the dust, that be great

Just read that GM is planning a major shutdown of 13 of it's 20 N. American assembly plants this summer for several weeks. This will reduce their planned N. American output by 190K units.

i love to hear about these "american" cars. do you realize that most of these cars are still made overseas anyway?
http://www.automotiveaddicts.com/inthenews/07-10-06.html
that is chock full of info. "Not to mention such iconic American rides as the Ford Mustang, which is made of just 60 percent US/Canadian content." american my butt.

i don't think that GM will disappear. What's going to happen is that they are going to file for bankrupcy, wipe out stockholder equity and the unions and start fresh. This will hurt ford in the long run as GM will be able to compete in the market again, while ford will still have that heavy union overhead.

I agree that GM needs to stop making the same car under different brands. I say they keep pontiac, chevy and GM.

ProKiller - thats a good read. Well, I do own an '08 Escape.

Just thinking about it, my '66 Mustang probably didn't have an american made radio in it. Thats about when the transistorized radios started showing up. Hell, we most likely haven't had an american made radio in a new car since the days of the Philco radios of the early '70's. Let alone any other electronics! Wonder what the parts content of the SN95's was.....

It all comes down to greed. If you can't make a car that sells, quit paying your upper Excs.... Back off giving them money for poor performance.

The plants will be sold to off shore companies and we'll be working for the off shore assholes. But the fall of our car industry is not our cars but the butthole CEOs that rape their American companies. They should all go to jail.
