Well as the title says, I'm going to the junkyard tomorrow and gonna be looking for some gt-40 heads. I know there's gt40 and gt40p, but what one is better to bolt up and what years explorers are they off of? What else do I need to buy to accompany them?

i believe the gt-40 heads are on the 99-02 5.0 explorers. your intake should bolt up them. but you will need new headers. there are a couple companies out there that make them, the only one off the top of my head is MAC

You'll have to search, maybe on the corral, for old threads breaking down production. I wanna say late 97 is when they switched to the gt-40p heads. Before then they were just gt40s.

GT-40p's have a smaller combustion chamber (slightly higher compression) and a different spark plug angle (thus making headers an involved project). I wanna say one has a different exhaust valve size.

Anywho, the gt40p's are supposed to be more efficient, so i got those. But do some researching on headers and such to see what u have in store for u ahead if u run them.

www.car-parts.comhttp:// should help u locate some explorers/mountaineers

^ you are right on the years. The gt40p is supposedly more effeceint.... probaly not enough to make a difference. I think it is the p with a smaller valve. I can't remeber and I don't feel like searching for it, but it is in one of the other threads recently if you feel eager to look. You will need the speacial headers, but several people have gotten by with the angled spark plug boot, probaly still a bitch though to remove the plug.

Power difference in the 2 is negligable.

GT40 has a 1.84/1.54 valve

GT40P has a 1.84/1.46 valve
