I got it started tonight but Im having a timing issue. I set it at 10 btdc(take it to 0 and turn it clockwise to the 10) on the crank and the rotor at the cyl #1 position and to get it to start I have to turn the dizzy to the right to get it to idle at all. During idle it has a "knocking" noise. When im using the timing light its showing the little slot thats either on the bottom or side off the balancer.

The setup is:
B303 cam
Scorpion RRs
BBK O/R h pipe
BBK shortys

Any ideas?

Make sure all ur spark plug wires are correct, knocking or ticking, ur new rockers could be adjusted incorrectly, u no longer have the stock cam so the base timing could also not be 10 anymore, those cams with advance already in the grind i think , 2 or 4 degrees of advance i think.

Did you make sure that cylinder #1 was at tdc on compression stroke when u aligned the rotor to the spark terminal, go check that , take a long screwdriver and insert it down the spark plug hole of number #1 and rotate the engine to compression stroke on number one, check ur distributor rotor to see if its pointing to or close to number one or i think that does not really matter but its better, the align one of the post on the cap to the rotor and that should be spark for number one , then just follow along with the firing order and wire all ur cylinders, there u have 0 degree at BTDC or close, remove spout connector and start the car, time it to what ever setting is that u want it to run , if the balancer still has the marks in the correct spots then u should be good to go, if the have slipped then u should get a new balancer.

All the wires are correct. I made sure to go over them twice. I set it to 0 on the balancer and the rotor to the #1 spot and it will fire up but shows 20+ ATDC on the balancer.

The sound is definately a knocking. Kind of a detonation sound. If i turn it to the left it will go away but the car will run for a little while on its own (loping hard) but die shortly after.

Also is it absolutlely necessary to run a bigger fuel pump when doing cam and rockers and exhaust? I have a 255 lph walbro with install kit sitting here if so.

Ok i tried everything to no avail. So i pulled the front cover off to check the timing marks. Low and behold the crank timing mark was off 2 teeth (to the right of the cam gear mark) I lined it up and checked the #1 piston and its at TDC. Now I hope it'll time right.

BTW i know about the SPOUT plug.

it happens.
there are a few common problems with these cars. if you stay caught up on them then you'll be happy well into the 200,000 mile mark.
unless you beat your pony like a rented mule that is

Well my car has over 200k now. It was stored winters and driven by a late 30s attorney for its whole life. The car was completely stock when I bought it. Other than normal routine maintenance it hadnt been touched.

So was the balancer ur problem ? If it was completely appart then that was giving u the timing marks on the incorrect spot so u were adjusting it no were near of were it needed to be to even be driveable.

Ok balancer is ordered (I went with the summit one instead thanks CC) I also purchased a rocker shim kit. I didnt need one when I adjusted my rockers because none of them went past 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn but Im going to recheck them and I would like a 1/2 turn on all of them.
