Yeah, clowns... They have a special award they give out during the Saturday evening banquet at their MiniNats convention called the "Big Wheel" award. The winner is chosen from a list of people who have had mishaps over the past year. Funny as hell and very silly. The winner has to actually RIDE the big wheel across the room. The winner also has to modify it in some way before the year is out. We love it!
Then again, their events can be very serious. Last year there were multiple real 289 GT40s (worth around $8M each), and at least one 427 GT40 Mk 4. There was also a REAL Shelby Daytona Coupe there (not one of the original six, but a real built-by-Shelby in 1970). That's a $15M car and the owner had it out on the track driving the wheels off it during the vintage race. The sound of that car is beautiful mechanical music. Just after I took the attached GT40 picture, Rick Kopec (President of SAAC national) told me "You know that picture you just took? I said "yeah", he said "That's what $30M worth of Shelbys looks like". That gave me a new perspective.
I was the Paddock Marshall for that event.
