but i doubt it needs a rebuild if it hasnt had any symptoms until now.

could be something simple. do you see any leaks around the transmission? you dont sound sure that the fluid level is good. if your driveway is on a grade and its low on fluid it will do this. most of the time the pump doesnt just go suddenly like that.

Not necessarily the AODE i had in my old 95 Vert went south at only 57k miles on it.

i wasnt talking about mileage, i was talking about symptoms. he made it sound like he just went out there and all of a sudden it wouldnt move, which almost NEVER happens with an AODE/4r70w..... not saying it doesnt, but its very very rare. usually all of them will exhibit some sign of problems before needing a rebuild, and even then alot of times its heat related, or a control problem and not the actual hard parts that failed. problem is most people dont know crap about transmissions and think since there is a problem it needs rebuild, and transmissions shops will tell you it needs rebuilt pretty much no matter what.

my car has 200k miles on it, pushing 10+psi, never had a cooler, and the pan was never dropped. it started flaring badly, and didnt want to shift right, very inconsistent and my torque converter clutch was cutting in and out. everybody in person (including shops) and online told me it was time for a rebuild. against advice i dropped the pan, changed the filter, drained the torque converter and refilled with mercon V, and added a cooler, and i've never driven a 94-97 that shifted better. the 98+ have a different valvebody so i wont include them, they all shift great.

I guess i was a rare occasion then. I drove it to work and it started shifting hard then the next thing you know it won't go out of 2nd gear. Had to even manually shift it to get it to do that. This is with a full service record of every 12k miles with a new filter and fluid.

that sounds like a control problem to me, not internal damage. valvebody crossleak, MLPS bad, or a stuck accumulator.

its correctly called a MLPS, or manual lever postion switch. the only problem the MLPS being bad will give you is incorrect gears, it doesnt have the ability to command neutral though.

however, it could be locked in another forward gear, but if reverse is gone aswell thats not the case.
