So i popped the hood today (1996 gt 4.6l 2v) and a weird sound was comming from the engine. I rev it a little and a sound that sounds like a supercharger was comming from the engine. It sounds like it is comming from the alternator or belt or something but not exactly sure. It still drives fine, but it seems like something is going to break soon. Any clues what it could be?

I was going to say to take the belt off for a couple minutes just to rule out the motor.
experience works too.

could be the alternator they can be noisy, also either an idler pulley or tensioner. best bet is take the belt off and see if you still hear it, if no then get the belt back on and see if you can find if its from the alternator (put a screw driver on the casing **be careful** and if you can hear it more and louder though the screw driver then you'll know its from that or the idler

oorrr.. get a piece of heater hose and put it up to your ear and snoop around the engine bay with the other end, very efficient at finding noises.

I would much rather use a Screw Driver to find noises then a piece of heater hose. I can just see it now heater hose getting caught in the belt whap right in the head :)

To the OP have you checked your Power steering fluid?? Also your tranny fluid?

How ol dis your alternator i geuss that could cause it. May want to try and take off the belt. Also you could try and check the pulleys but that probly be more of a sqeak.

forgot i made this thread. It ended up being the alternator. The bearing was like hanging off in pieces. Ten minutes and a new alternator and belt, and it was fixed
