Hurst shout throw. Hurst, hollow, white cue ball lookin' knob. Been rattling anythime i'm on the gas since day 1. I've listened to it for over 2 months now, and just wanted to get some information and/or advice before I pulled the shifter.

At first I thought, the knobs loose... But no, it's good.
Then I checkd bolts in shifter handle, and they are also good.
Drove down the road with no shifter ball at all, and sound was less annoying, but still there.
Tried a solid hurst T-handle (yuck) and it still rattled.
I only can think that it is something farther down the shifter.
Is there a bushing or something under the shifter where it goes into the the trans? if so, are they available to buy seperate?

Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks, and GO HURST!!! lol

btw. shifter assy has approx 10000 miles on it... And judging by the guy i bought the car from, those are 10000 very hard miles.

Thanks,
Mike

hurst (and many aftermarket) shifters rattle. its because they are a single solid piece, opposed to ford's design of two pieces with rubber in between.

the only thing you can do is put on a cobrabob shifter gasket.

also, make sure you leave all the factory sound-deading material in place.

I may be interested, because the stock one did not come with the car. Ima try to use 45 gallons of silicone rtv and a cobrabob gasket set, and 4 fist-fulls of assembly lube.

Maybe it will work...

Did you ever pull the shifter to see if they nylon bushing that the shifter ball sits in inside the transmission is cracked or missing?

It's the same thing that happens on the old toploader hurst trans. When you screw the knob on, there is a small pocket of air up in the top above the thread inside the knob. It causes alot of noises to come through the shifter and be really really annoying. Our 65 coupe has the same problem.

yes check that bushing, some aftermarket shifters will rattle no matter what you do and some won't ever rattle.

My steeda tri-ax doesn't rattle... but since it is a solid piece connected directly to the transmission it merely translates ALL noises into the passenger compartment. trust me, when you miss a gear. you hear all the nice grinding and metallic noises

my hurst came with a stop nut... i put it all the way to the bottom, screwed the knob on all the way till it stopped, then screwed up the stop nut. still rattles... dono how air would cause it to rattle?? or how lack of air would prevent the rattling?

It provides a little chamber in there. It's weird as hell but it worked. Got rid of the little pocket at the top and it went away.
