Hey guys. Well i was wondering if something was wrong... I was on the way home yesterday on a 2 lane road with the speed limit at 55. I was going a comfy 60 when i got behind a slow poke going 40 mph... well i put my blinker on and went to pass. The passing lane was soon ending so i decide to punch it... when i did it jumped out of gear like it was about to down shift but the rev's went to like 5 to 6 k and then it started pulling "kinda popped and bit" .

This happened a long time ago when i was turning right at an intersection with a car coming so i was trying to get out the way and it reved up and then "popped" into gear. This was about 2 or 3 months ago...

Could someone tell me what could be the problem? Could the filter be clogging up or something? I'm way behind on an auto oil change but i don't want to change the oil since its like $120 for the trans to fall out the next week. Could someone please shine some light on this problem.

Thanks
Mitchell.

Well, it sounds like the band slipped pretty badly. I don't know alot about Ford transmissions, but you really don't want to let that go. Like seriously.

It definately warrants a fluid change, but first, check the color. It should be at least more red than dark.

I hate to break it to you but thats what mine did right before it went out. Sorry, and I hope you have better luck Mine only did this in secound gear too, but when it got worse it started not shifting to secound, over revving first and slipping in secound.

But if I would have know the problem it could have been fixed the bands could have been tightened and stoped it from screwing the trans.

A shop will adjust the band and change the oil for about 80 bucks, I don't know how to adjust it on a Ford, but on a Chevy the pan has to be down. Don't just change the oil, because it won't go away, and you'll waste all the fluid.

Have you ever changed the oil on a 4r70w? The filter alone from a parts house is 40 bucks and the fluid you have to use is that mercron 5 so its 4 bucks a quart... :( To put totally new fluid in and filter for me to do it , it was around 1xx.00 somthing dollars... Not cheap lol. Any way they can adjust the band and i should be fine then? So this doesn't mean that my trans is about to totally die and i don't need a complete rebuild? I hope not. Thanks

I haven't, but now that you mention it, my buddy was bitching about his special fluid his F150 required and how expensive it was.

Bands should be adjusted as part of the regular maintence schedule of an auto trans, so if it isn't too far gone, yes an adjustment will save it for awhile. Basically they wear down and need to be adjusted tighter to the reverse input drum to make up for th e slack.

It seems to me like you were on top of it, so it should be fine, but with those miles, start saving to get a new trans anyway, don't expect another 160k out of it.

After the band is adjusted how much more do you think it will work??? and i guess i'll save to have a rebuild and get one of those kits that have the kevlar bands that last forever from what i hear.... What you think dude?

Hard to say, assuming you caught it in time, 20 to 40 k, but I honestly wouldn't bet on it.

They Kevlar nads and red alto clutches are very nice. You can also get wider bands and bigger servo's (servo's apply the band). But again, I've never done a Ford auto, so I'm not sure how much of this stuff is applicable to you.

Well it's hard to say how bad off it is right now, so I'm being conservative.

But yeah during a rebuild you can do a ton to keep it lasting longer. A wider kevlar band will have more surface area on the input drum, resulting is less slippage and lasting longer. Same with larger servo's, the push the band down faster and harder, resulting in less slip and longer life. Also these upgrades will result in less heat inside the trans, and firmer shifts.

When i build a auto I get the parts off Ebay, theres a certain vendor I always use because he has fair prices fast shipping etc, but I'll have to look and see if he's still there, I dont remember his name at the moment.

o ok thats cool, so when you say that your being conservative does that mean you think it will actually last shorter than that? or longer? thanks for all the help dude.

I suspect you got it very early on, so longer. But I don't know how it's actualy behaving or how much you really beat on it or anything like that, so I guess it could be worse, but I dont really think so.
