I have a 98 Cobra with 4.10 rear gears, a BBK X-Pipe, JLT Cold Air Intake and a Steeda Tri-Ax short shifter. I raced my buddy's 05 Mustang GT and he beat me 3 out of 5 times we raced. :( We were not exactly abiding by the speed limit, but it was a safe plot. I was sure I should have smoked him. I beat a friend of mine who has an 07 GT with my '67 Stang but I have a 347 Stroker in that. Anyways what are some ideas you guys can offer so my Cobra can get some more bite. My Cobra is also a Convertible so I know it's heavier than a Coupe Cobra. :mikec:

I did buy a tuner/flasher from SCT but,it was useless. I can't change gear ratio with tuner because 98 speedometer is mechanically controlled. It is basically for bigger injectors,MAF meter and for gas selection. Every other option was for automatic tranny's. It cost me about $400.00 and it was useless, so I returned it based on unsatisfactory results. :mikec:

with those mods you should be in the low 13's with your 98 Cobra pretty easy, if you can hook up that is. What are the mods to the 05GT??? Was this from a roll or a dig??

you can go with Longtubes / pulleys/ and a catback exhaust........get a tune and that should put you in the 300rwhp area or close to it at least. Other than that your going to have to go with a power adder OR dig into the motor being cams/ heads/ or a new intake of some kind.

I just got a tune on my 97 Cobra. It is bone stock right down to the air box. It is putting down 258rwhp and 250rwt. I asked my tuner what I needed to do to get 300rwhp. He told me long tubes, full exhaust cold air intake, and IRMC deletes. He said that would give me 305-310rwhp. I gained 22rwhp and 16rwt just from the tune.

I did after I had the tune done, but I did not post the dyno sheet. My scanner was not working properly. I will try again tonight.

Go with some LTs and a catback.. Also you can do IMRC deletes and a short runner intake. Also a pulley swap could be done(UD pulleys). Get some FRPP 9mm wires. Aluminum D/S. if you need to replace ur clutch soon, do so but with an aluminum flywheel.

next ide say get another tuner.. yea the tuners do not work by themselves, but they are needed for an actualy dyno tune. which greatly helps these cars.

Although you could go with a different set of heads, you could just have your Bheads P&P ed and come out making close to the same power as C heads, if not the same when you go FI.

Also you could got a nice shot of n2o.

But do not overlook the other supporting mods. You could rebuild your rear with better axels, redo ur suspension, get better rims with better tires, or rebuild ur engine for a large shot of n2o or a FI application.

If your buddy's GT is close to stock, you should be able to beat him with your mods which leads me to believe your car may not be running quite right. Have codes pulled to see if there are any that may clue you in to what's wrong.

My buddy's '05 GT is stock except for his CAI. I know from Ford Factory performance specs that the '05-07 GT's run 1/4 mile times in 13.4's and a stock 98 Cobra runs 1/4 mile in 13.99. I drove his car and that GT has some really good torque. It also has a traction control button that I believe helps him bigtime. As for my '98 Cobra, there is no check engine light on and it drives great. My take off needs some work, but I beat him on 3rd from a roll and on an empty freeway, around 135-140 mph he pulled on me 3 times after I down shifted to 4th from 5th around 100mph. I also think he almost redlined 4th gear and I shifted more cautiously. So thats how it went down, what do you guys think could have gone wrong?? :'(

13.4 is a very good time for a 05-07 gt. Your cobra with those gears/mods should be about a 13.4 or lower even. I still say you should have beat him. Last time I was at the track the best time I saw out of a stock 05-07 GT was a 14.0. Where someone in a bone stock 98 cobra with DR's was running a 13.7.

Ford saying the new GT's will run 13.4's stock is rather ambitious to be honest, I've never seen one run even close to that fast in stock form. After reading your last post, it sounds like you may need to invest in the driver mod, your and his cars are close enough that the driver will make all the difference in an actual race, so get to practicing brother, our cars are lighter, you should have just as much power as him with your mods, and you have much more rear gear than him.

:( Yeah I guess I do need a quicker take -off,but, on the freeway that is pretty much out the window. My speedometer is off because of the new 4.10s so I most likely shifted gears too soon. It now revs faster and louder as I'm driving so with the speedo off a bit I think I'm shifting early. Good excuse or truth??? U be the judge. :santa_afro:

with good drivers they have gone 12s relatively stock. my friends got an 07, mods are c&l intake with a tune, and mufflers removed, weld draglites, and lcas. car went 12.59 with a 1.6 60ft at 109...

First and foremost, you shouldn't be shifting by looking at the speedometer, you need to be looking at the tachometer, it is driven directly by the motor so no matter the rear gears, it is always right. The driver mod absolutely effects highway pulls especially with our Cobras because all of the power is up top, to get a decent run you need to be shifting as close to fuel cut (7100 rpm) as possible. You may want to invest in a shift light as it will take all the guess work out of when to crank the next gear. Also getting the car into that next gear can make or break a race, if you're shifting slow as hell you're going to get beat by slower cars all day long. Lightly preload the shifter, pound that clutch to the floor, and let back out on the clutch as early as possible, when you get good you'll be able to let out on the clutch as the shifter is going into the next gear rather than waiting for it to go into the gear and then letting out on the clutch.

That's not stock at all dude, that's a car with well over a grand in parts that's definitely on at least a drag radial if it's cutting 1.6 short times. As I originally posted, I was referring to a stock GT with a stock intake, no tune, mufflers, stock lca's, and whatever bullsh|t tires Ford puts on.

Quick note - get a Speedcal from Dallas Mustangs. Easy install and my speedo is pretty much dead on with 4.10s.
