How much play in steering?

Hey folks quick question,
How much play should we have in our steering? My car tends to wander on the highway. And there is a clunk in the in the steering column,when I turn the wheel. Oh I have about 2 in. of play this seems like a lot to me.
I had a Camaro (sorry!) that had about the same amount (or more.)

OK maybe I need to tell a little more.
I had an alignment job done on it about a year ago.
The wheel wasn't centered,and I thought the shop might notice something wrong.
The wheel is better,but it's still sloppy. My car was in a accident by a previous owner.
(found out about that from CARFAX,later of course) And also I have a black car with a RED k-member.
the car also has 156+K. miles. dont know much about rack and pinion, but I wonder if the rack is shot.

Wasted steering shafts are common problems in our cars as well. I would check the rubber rag joint to see if it's wasted.
