Installing rear end gears is a little bit over my skill level. Nor would I look forward to the task. So I'm going to have a reputable shop do it for me instead. How much should I look to pay for the installation? On average. Got some off of summit racing.

Oh and as a minor point of curiosity, how do you tell what gears your car came with? Someone mentioned something about a tag on the rearend. I think I remember seeing it when I changed the fluid, but I'm not sure what number to look at then look up.

I was just quoted @ 350 for the labor to do the gears on mine by my local speedshop.

An easy way to tell what gear is in your car is to put the rear of the car on stands. Have someone spin the rear wheel 10 times and count how many times the driveshaft spins. 35 times = 3.55, 37= 3.73 and so on.

I paid $330 or so for the gears and install kit, and did the install myself. I would guess tack on another $2-300 for installation if I had to guess

Dang kind of an expensive job. I was hoping it would be somewhere in the area of $200 lol. I'm sure you can pay that somewhere, but you might not want to. Cause they'd probably howl.

Which also begs another question. What kind of power can the stock setup take? How long until you need to switch to a different setup anyway? Would I be wasting my money on gears right now if I want to make closer to 500 hp someday? I really don't want to pay for stuff only to have to undo it later. And waste money that way.

I still want to go 75 on the highway without a screaming engine and wasting gas. So I was thinking 3:55's. That puts it at what... 2400 RPM at 75mph? Something like that. And I heard that 3:55's still wake the car up a bit.

If I supply gears . It's 700 taxes in for frpp 3.55-4.30 gears, master bearing kit and rebuilt posi unit. This is how we always do it unless the cars like a newer low mile car . Or they didn't like there last gear set they just recently had installed

There is a way to find out your gears in your car by the sticker inside your drivers door. IIRC they correspond with a letter ill try to find the link.

I was quoted for ~$300 to have my gears put in. That does not include the actual parts or fluid.

So I can buy any set of gears and have them installed, and not worry about adding power to the car in the future? If I do end up having to go with a stronger setup out back in the future, will the gears I buy now still be ok?

Yeah you'll be fine. I'd definitely go with Ford gears. I have a buddy with a brand new set of Ford 3.55's he'd sell for 100 plus shipping if you're interested. He bought em for his S/C'd car and decided to stay with his 3.73's.
