**please take your time to read and respond if you have ANY advice, im tired of fighting my car and just want to get this fixed ASAP. i come to you guys because you very knowledgeable and with everyones combined experience, we should be able to solve this. thanks for all the help in advance everyone, you always come through**

so my car has been giving me some hell recently, then again, when has it not? lol :angry7:

syptoms:
-at initial start up(when cold and has been sitting for hours), it runs richer then hell, and it has a really low idle(assuming from being so rich)
-proceding on to driving, it has NO, none, zip, zero, nada power(DONT SAY MAF, cleaned it twice in two weeks)
*to elaborate:
-you can smell how rich is running while in the car, it litterally burns my eyes
-i cant even feather the throttle to get rolling without it bogging down and threatening to stall out
-its like this in all gears, as soon as i shift the rpm drops to the floor before i can get it to the next gear
-by no power i mean studdering like crazy! im talking about bucking the a world class bull(it tends to smooth out higher in the rpms, but not very much
-the strange:
*after start up, and driving for appx. five minutes, everything is OK?!? it runs like its never had a problem in its life
-the transition from running bad to good is instant!? ill be giving it about 3/4 throttle in 2nd gear just trying to get up to 40 mph(takes about 15 to 20 secs.), and then i get whiplash and get thrown into my seat because it decides to run perfect
*the stanger: (ugh)
-you guessed it, it starts running like **** again. and then good and then bad and good. and continues this cycle for pretty much as long as im driving. just off and on. and im sometimes lucky enough to catch a good spell to where it doesnt run bad at all after the warm up period

facts:
-all these problems started a little over a month after the in/uninstall of everything below. prior to all of that it ran great
-complete tune up done(plugs, wires, dist. cap, oil/filter, MAF)
-installed full exhaust headers to tips 3 months ago(BUT it ran fine for the first month with no hitches WHATSOEVER)
-removed smog at the same time as ^^
-removed EGR with above ^^(TO ALL YOU AGAINST THIS, again, it ran the best it ever has after the exhaust and removal of this stuff)
-been using the same gas station for over a year

my thoughts:(i have no mechanic experience besides the basics so dont mind my input, im just trying to offer suggestions)
-first thing that comes to my mind is def. FPR. for it to be running so inconsistent, i wouldnt kno if those go bad it could cause something like this
-timing is out of whack? doesnt make sense to me, i would think that it would always run bad and not be so off and on
-needs a tune? how and why it would want to run bad now at a random time? it was just so out of the blue. running great for 9 months, then the next morning, boom. and hasnt been running good sense.

thats about all i can come up with. i am open to ALL suggestions. if you got this far i appreciate it more then anything for taking your time to help me out. thanks :notworthy:

Check fuel pressure.
Run codes.
Reinstall your EGR.
Check for vacuum leaks.

Check grounds, all grounds.
Make sure the O2 sensors are plugged in tight.
Also make sure the MAF has a good tight connection.
Then look over the distributor.

It really sounds like something is coming loose.

Oh, and I just had very similar problems with my '95 GT daily driver. It would run, stumble like crazy to the point where I needed to keep it floored to keep it running, dump black clouds out the exhaust, die ten or so times, then suddenly fix itself and run normally.

I traded it for a new Honda Civic. Problem solved. :icon_rr:

Did you get your car tuned after removing the EGR? Also just cause you cleaned your MAF doesn't mean there's not something wrong with it.

sounds very much like a ground issue or a loose connection somewhere.....ecu or somewhere else..
things to check...
1- replace coolant temperature sensor....this commands fuel at all temperatures and it might be giving you trouble...it is cheap.
2- check all engine grounds... driver side motormount ground to chassis, intake manifold to firewall etc...
3- Tps check your tps voltage at idle (no throttle and open throttle of course your car should be off).
try a new maf sensor.... just because you cleaned it doesn't mean it's in good shape....or borrow from a fellow mustanger a stock 94-95 maf and test drive.
can't think of anything else now good luck..

I'd check grounds and wiring to the injectors and ignition system on the motor.

whew, this is going to be a long check list. haha. never thought i would get so many respsonses. lol. thanks so much to everyone. i really cant thank you enough!!:)

just wondering, i retightend the headers to xpipe flang a couple time during break in, and obviously you have to take off the 02 sensors. and i was stupid enough to lay them on the ground. could they go bad if the tips get scratch up?? and one makes a rattling noise and the other doesnt? whats that all about? i think im going to start there. then check the connections. swap out a maf. and if that fails. then obviously i need a tune. any idea how much those run?? im scared to find out. lol.

thanks once again:)

get a haynes/chiton manual. there is a bunch of info that will help you do the little things yourself. and to make you more knowledgeable when you have to take it to the shop

First before you replace anything run codes.KOEO KOER and Cylinder balance test. LUK. http://sbftech.com/index.php/topic,2471.0.html

Removing the EGR would not cause this. The ECM deletes the EGR function when it throws an EGR code. There for you don't need to "tune for it"

As said Check fuel pressure you may need to monitor it while driving.

Does sound like it could be a MAF issue. you should test it as seen here.

ECT sensor should throw a code. But before you just replace it put ohm it out and see if its about the same as the temperature outside or the coolant temp if car is warmed up.

LUK your results.

If it was the O2s wouldn't the car run fine at WOT?

Yes, Onyx, it will run "fine" at WOT. I pulled my hair out for a week in 2006 chasing this exact problem.

I don't believe this is true. My car ran horribly the minute I took the EGR off. Reinstalled it, and it worked like a champ.

ill definitely do all the non money stuff first to avoid spending cash on stuff that doesnt help.

**if your o2's are bad, will it throw a cel? or do you just replace and hope for some good luck?? because it will studder with partial throttle and then if i put it to the floor 9 times out of 10 it will just start pullin hard like crazy. so im hoping its only something simple like the 02's. because i would just unplug them and leave them on the ground and they may have got kicked around**

thanks for all the help!! keep any input coming.

You'll get a lean or rich code most likely. But don't run and replace your o2's You need to test them because they may be working and your car is running lean/rich . Catch my drift?
