So you're not even 20.. But you did everything perfect, but still the car failed after doing everything perfect? I'm not doubting you know what your doing, but sometimes it does pay to have someone with more experience looking over your shoulder to check your work. I've been around push rod engines for awhile, and out of all the engines my dad and others have build, a lifter failing has never been on this list. Just sounds way odd to me, not saying it can't happen, just.. odd.
Anywho, not trying to be more negative. Good luck on your next project.. or this one. Crate engines are a beautiful thing!

if it wasnt knocking when you stopped it i'm sure its fine. did you prime the oil pump before starting the motor??? solid lift cam right??
i'd throw another one in it with plenty of lube, button it all up and prime the oil system (no fire cranking for a 30 seconds) and you should be fine.
these things happen even if everything is done PERFECTLY, cant let it beat you though, get back on the horse....

im frustrated with my car too... just dont think about it at all for a few days.... ... watch some movies, hump your ol' lady, go out for steaks...
in a couple of days you'll feel much better about it... you just have to let the stress level drop first, thats step #1.

That does sound frustrating, but it could be way worse. Just wait until that shit happens with your $30k race motor with $300 pushrods, $600 lifters, and Custom cams.... then it gets real fun.
That's mechanics for you though. Machines break, parts wear out, people install things wrong. That's the hobby we are in, and that's the price of admission.
You'll be more pissed off if you give up and it never runs and you never drive it, trust me.
BTW were these solid lifters or rollers?

It was part of it. Shouldnt have used those lifters in the first place. Theres only a few ways to royally screw up a camshaft. I adjusted my valves correctly the first time, but some of the lifters stuck and loosened them up. He adjusted them, fucked the cam up. Easy enough for you to understand? Irra-freaking guardless, I don't have the money to throw at it right now, and quite frankly I've put more money in this car then ever, and I've gotten no where. It's a pile of sheet metal in my garage with some paint on it. I love the car, but I'm not stupid enough to waste my entire 20's trying to get it to run.

waste your entire 20s? Don't you think you're blowing this a little out of proportion? So you have to drop the pan, pull the engine out and get it done. It's not the end of the world.

Yeah but even you said sometimes it happens, chances are if you rebuild everything correctly you'll have no problems and I can guarantee you you'll be so much more satisfied than if you ditch the project.
I've been working on installing long tubes, dipsticks and a KB since late July last year, now that it's almost done do you know how awesome it's going to be because of all the BS I've had to deal with sometimes more than once just to get things to finally turn out right? Very satisfying.

its hard to make you feel any better about the situation but give it a few days atleast before you make any big decisions.
sometimes the "right parts" meaning the better more reliable parts dont work well together just as cheap parts would. this is just something that happens when you get into a custom engine build, alot of unknowns and the "common" problems you'd look for when putting them together are looked over. for instance someone thats never built a "custom" non roller SBF might not know that spring pressure is very important for cam longevity.
just seen you said the valves were adjusted a few times, i'd be willing to bet now there is your problem...
