What do I need to do? I met a guy at a party who said a good way to get a cobra motor for cheap was to hit up a junkyard in Los Angeles and get one from there. What do you guys think? Whats the best way? Anything I need to know? Advice? Personal Experience?

I've got a Mark 8 lincoln motor that I'll sell you for $300 bucks. Comes with automatic trans, and Motor. It has 92,000 miles on it. It's almost the same as the Cobra 4 valve. Only it has a different intake, and I believe there may be a few other minor changes to it. I had planned to do the 4 valve swap into my V6 mustang, but unfortunately the whole swap would have been too costly and time consuming for me. Unless you know how, and have the tools to install this engine, it will most likely be expensive.

Wait, do you have a 5.0???? The 5.0 would be awesome to build, even though the stock block can't hold as much power as the 4.6. A built 347 would be great N/A. With the right suspension, H/C/I combo, a 347 can easily do 10's.

Mark VIII's also have cast cranks, different cams and springs from the Cobra motors, but for 300 still an AWESOME price on the combo.

As for "hitting up a junkyard in LA and getting one from there" that's pretty damn vague. Cobra motor's go quick everywhere anyway, mainly because they say Cobra on them.

A 5.0 cobra motor or a 4.6 motor??

if its a 5.0 cobra motor is not worth the swap, now if its a 4.6 is a whole different story, youll need computer, wiring harness and a whole bunch of other stuff.

imo just buy a Cobra unless you have the time, patience and knowledge.

Thats exactly why I didn't do the swap. The guy that I was going to pay to do it just said buy another car, simply because it's easier, and less frustrating... but I still have the itch to put that motor to good use.

if its a 5.0 just build one, pretty simple, forged internals, obviously a cobra intake OR gt-40 damnnn close but if u want strictly cobra then obviously do cobra. thats about it, computer is same

so forged internals and a cobra intake will get me close to 300 horses? Can you elaborate a little on how to modify my motor more closely to how a cobra engines set up would be? thanks.

i'm assuming you have a 5.0, so cobras dont come with forged internals, so all you need to basically have a cobra motor is gt-40 heads, gt-40 intake, 24 lbs injectors, and a stock cobra cam with 1.7 roller rockers and then for the most part you have what a cobra has, but if you just want a good power bump to be like a cobra or better then all you need is the gt-40 heads, stock gt cam with 1.72 rockers, and then buy my edelbrock intake set-up i have for sale...lol, and then always the typical bolt on stuff doesnt hurt either

depend on if you buy new or used
gt-40 heads can be picked up for a few hundred bucks
a stock cobra cam probably less than a hundred if you can find one
set of 1.7 rockers depends on if they are used or new, new they are around $250
cobra intake can be picked up for a few hundred used
24 lbs injectors are $250 or more new, obviously cheaper if they are used
then a gasket kit, probably like $100 if that

but if you get the gt-40 heads for a few hundred then you can keep the stock cam and get 1.72 rockers for around $250 new or cheaper used
buy my edelbrock intake setup that includes a ported performer rpm, aeromotive fuel pressure regulator and 30 lbs injectors for $550 ship to where ever youre at ( sorry just trying to sell my intake...lol )

either way you'll probably see around 250 hp, get more if you have the heads ported, if you want to see more around the 300 mark then youll need to get a good set of aluminum heads that can be picked up used for around $800-900

What conversion? You don't need an engine with a Cobra logo on it to make power. But, and no offense, I think you need to step back, and do a little more listening and learning before you do any spending.

well technically he would be doing a hci from gt to cobra, its what most would call the budget build that many people talk about, but yes aluminum heads, a good cam, and intake would be more a lot more beneficial, but gt-40s are good heads and can gain a lot when ported and have bigger valves

i spent $800 for my gt40X heads, $200 for 1.72 rockers, and bought the intake new for $550, so with just that i spent $1,550, if i would have got a cam then the total would probably be around $1,800

it all depends on what you can find for what price

what do you want, a good bump in power with a budget build or gain a lot more with a good set of aluminum heads, cam, and intake

for budget, you can get good power with stock gt-40 heads, they are always being sold somewhere, you just have to find them, i typically see them for around $300-$400, intakes i dont know probably a couple hundred, $200-$250 for a new cam (i wouldnt trust a used cam), so just that probably $1000 or less if you find deals, but if you want roller rockers, fuel injectors, ect. ect. other bolt on stuff then cost is going up, just depends on what you can find
