Im looking to improve the sound of my standard 1997 4.6 GT exhaust. Mainly make it slightly louder. Is there anyway of doing this with out getting an exhaust that has no cats!?

Im liking the sound of the flow master so far, had a listen to some on You tube. Will have a think. Gonna to have a chat with my local Predator Exhaust place at the weekend to see what they say!

Cheers

A catback system or simple replacing of the mufflers is exactly what you're looking for if you want to retain cats but add volume.

The typical Mustang sound includes going with Flowmaster, but there are many other options. Magnaflow makes a great system with either mufflers or 'Magnapacks', which are basically little bullet mufflers that allow much more sound through. SLP makes the Powerflo and Loudmouth I and II systems, but Powerflo is likely going to be too quiet for you. A lot of guys don't like the Loudmouth systems because they seem to simply add loudness and volume (not in a good way), but don't seem to have much good "tone" to them. Additionally, if you ever add an aftermarket midpipe, the Loudmouth systems traditionally become TOO loud for most to take for too long. Mac also makes a decent-sounding catback, but I can't say much for their quality as I've not experienced it. In my own personal opinion, Magnaflow is tops in terms of quality: stainless steel, great fitment and near show-quality finish, amazing durability (their mufflers won't gradually blow out the insides or deteriorate like some will), and excellent sound.

Good luck with your choice.

yeah i agree.....people have only said positive things about my exhaust note with 40's, however, I also agree flows with a x pipe is really tinny and hollow sounding and an H-pipe sounds more classic (deep rumble) and less rice. the slp and magna packs also sound good with stock mid pipe, however, they are raspy as hell with a mid pipe. so just something to consider if thats in your plans later.
as far a performance goes, i bet the magna and slp make a tad more dude to the straight flow design....some people say flowmasters are crap and don't gain anything.....to each his own...i don't agree

Just a thought, but you would also notice a difference in sound by replacing the factory six catted h with a high flow catted x, or h pipe.

i have a complete MAC system [longtubes, prochamber, catback with 3" tips] and i can attest for product quality. however, you have to pay attention to what you're buying. MAC sell HTS coated, uncoated and just plain ass black painted steel kits... price reflects quality for sure!! As far as sound goes, buy a catted Hpipe with a american thunder [2 chamber flowmaster] catback.... live the dream lol

mac catted H is the only way legally.

But if you just change the mufflers with the stock H you will get tired of the little tone/sound change in about 3 days. You need to change the midpipe and mufflers
