The 2v's never lived up to the expectations. The C head motors and 03/04 motors were much better motors, but obviously at the end of the 4.6's rein. If I didn't own a 4v I'd own a 5.0 again. However I will say that jalopnik has about the same automotive expertise as a 32 year old Tibetan midget so I'm not really that concerned. They can tell me 4v's suck as we merrily stroll along with our 600hp stock longblock cobras.

Yup just like we've heard pushrods are prehistoric, solid rear axles are caveman styled, etc etc. it's all what you do to make it faster.

the 5.0 sucked balls stock
the 4.6 NPI was right on par with the ball sucking

and now we're just getting better and better with OHC designs. death of the pushrod is near though ;]

the technology is becoming out dated in anything except performance cars. OHC motors are becoming more and more efficient in both power as well as gas mileage. If anything it, will literally be the dinosaurs (aka fossil fuels) that kill the pushrod motor due to its incapabilities of being efficient with its current technologies. If someone other than Chevrolet puts money into it, it may make a comeback, but, most companies are seeing the light in OHC design.

Is the pushrod still strong in Motorsports? yes, but, mainly drag racing and NASCAR. Road racing sees the OHC motor becoming dominant with every year of progression ford makes with their motors.

EDIT: and FYI I'm no OHC nuthugger. I've own a pushrod, very easy to work on and cheap. it's just a matter of what the general public wants versus the small percentage of us.

And that's why they needed a bailout :looks:

Bailout or not, GM engine technology is/was and WILL better than Ford.

took Ford years to come up with a good engine to battle the all mighty LS1, Ford takes one step forward and GM takes 3 LOL!
Ford its such a joke. and yes i still owe a mustang... Sadly.

My 1995 GT feels exactly like my 1997 GT.. and my 1995GT has 3.73 while my 97GT was stock.

All 1994-1998 v8's in stock form are all lacking. But i still love my car =]

That's what happens when a tiny company like ford goes up against GM. GM has much more R&D money floating around. They aren't just developing for the camaro, it's money for the corvette, camaros, Cadillac, etc. You are comparing a company who has one true performance car, the mustang, against an entire company like GM.. how on earth do you expect them to compete. I say they do pretty damn well for what they have. The 5.0 is put in trucks and mustangs, under one brand. Lincoln is ford's only real separate "brand" beyond the standard blue oval, and they have no use for a 5.0. So you can imagine they had a fraction of the budget GM had when it came to development.

I never understand why the ls1 is considered so great... doesn't the 4.6 4v make more power per liter?

If ford used comparable displacement motors they would wipe the table with Chevy. Look at the 00 r motor and the power it makes. 5.4 that makes more power than the ls1 5.7 juts sucks they didn't. Make that the stock motor

Super biases statement. All mighty LS1? Come-on, who was the king on street for a good half decade. The 03/04 Cobra, thats some serious fanboy talking over here. I heard all the excuses but what it comes down too, which car can be made the fastest in the shortest amount of time that wont break the bank. LS1 was top dog pre 2002 because svt couldn't muster a car to be on par with the LS1 until 2002/2003. I highly suggest you should read John C's Iron fist lead foot.

Yep. They both in stock form where almost exact match because ford designed the 4.6 to replace the 5.0. Only thing that 4.6L was lacking is more low-end which 5.0 delivered but thats pretty much it.
