I'm going to be getting some headers eventually for my 96gt and i was just wondering which ones will be the loudest. What's the difference in the two? I am going to get my o/r h pipe first so i am thinkin bout going with the shorties. Any opinions and info would be nice. :help2:

Just flow 40's and a k&n intake. I'm just trying to round out my exhaust so i can move on to other mods. How much more of a performance gain would i get from longtubes vs shorties?

Alright thanx everyone for the advice. I guess i'll have to wait longer so i can just buy the o/r h pipe and LT's at the same time. I think i'm ganna go with flowtech the black lt's, their the cheapest i can find for like 280. plus i have a friend who installed them on his 97 cobra and he said he would help me with them when the time came. ^-^

long tubes are a nice performance upgrade. I would say 15-20 rwhp with the long tubes. My car trapped 96 with long tubes and 3.73s. So the only performance upgrade at the time was long tubes and cai.

My car all npi auto with only long tubes and 3.73s was trapping 96 and should of ran 14.2-14.4 with a good 60.

shorty headers, because of unequal tube length, dont really make much more power, also if supercharged they tend to crack, long tube headers are the way to go

don't lt's give ur exhaust a little bit more rumble?

I read somewhere that lt's give you more power in like the 2200 - 3500 range and the shorties give you more in the 3600-4000 idk tho I was reading about it in a magazine the other day while i was waiting at the dentist and I dont' remember too well

longtubes in general give you more flow. I'll probably be installing mine here soon

"Shorties" were only a marketing ploy invented by Ford.

"LT's" are real headers. There's a reason that they were the way headers were always made.

Good luck with that nightmare...... I have a shop with a rack, and it usually takes us between 6-8 hours to install long tubes on a 4.6 car (10 hrs or a cobra)

You generally have to drop the rack, pull apart the front suspension and you HAVE TO remove the steering column (make sure the battery is disconnected or the air bags will deploy) The shop I use charges about $400-$500 to install. After the price of the headers, and the install, your looking at $1K. TOTAL WASTE of money unless you got some MAJOR mods such as cams (not just PI) intake, S/C, NOS, or something along that line.

I personally sold my long tubes after I found out they only netted me 20HP over the stockers. I used the money instead to get new rims (18's) and a lowering kit, plus a complete PI swap.... much more useful than the headers would have been.

If you really think about it, the 03-04 Cobras (even though they are 4V) basically employ the same short tube design and most of them dyno at 400+hp stock. Just a bit of info I also found helpful.

I didnt buy the longtubes looking for big gains, or crazy power. Basically I went for sound and novelty item.. On all of my mustangs and hotrods in general i've had longtubes, and don't plan on stopping here. It's not a big deal, i've done some amazing things out of my two stall garage.. and if it gets bad enough I can go down to my pops shop and use the lift. I guess if your looking at spending your money specifically on things that make the biggest difference, go for it, But i'm about buying what I want, regardless of the difference. Granted it is nice to see the extra ponys.. and 20 hp isn't a bad gain compared to the small amount a tb/plenum gives you and most bolt ons in general.
