lowering the car

Hello guys,

i want to lower my car, especially on the front.
But someone said i could cut off a ring of my original spring , is this possible ?

i don't really like the idea, because my car will be lowered, but te stiffnes of my spring won't increase right ?

I live in the netherlands so, it's not easy or cheap to get parts here.

I wouldn't cut springs. If you dont want to spend a lot of money on the setup just go with springs only. They're not big or heavy so shipping from the US really shouldn't kill you, you could even get some secondhand ones

Start with half a coil. If you lower cut more. . Get some good socks and struts will make all the difference.

I have my stock mach 1 springs cut a full coil in the front, untouched in the rear, ride is better than the H&S Race springs the car came with.Cutting a LINEAR rate spring won't affect ride quality unless you chop off more than 2 coils. NEVER cut a progressive spring though.

Yeah if you do need to cut a progressive spring go for the dead coils at the top.

Alot of the spring and shock/strut companies should be pretty easy to come by in Europe. Maybe not your particular area. But it doesnt need to come directly from a mustang website if you know the parts you are looking for.

H&R SS springs or Eibachs Sportlines are generally the 2 favorite

Cutting a linear rate spring will increase the spring rate proportional to the amount of spring cut off.

Example: cutting a 10" 250lb/in spring in half creates two 5" 500lb/in springs.

There's a lot more to properly lowering a car than just replacing the springs though. Personally, I'm not a fan of cutting springs but I know not everyone feels the same.

OP, I would say save until you can do it properly the first time and don't cut corners. A set of H&R springs, Bilstein HD shocks/struts, Maximum Motorsports C&C plates, and Maximum Motorsports bumpsteer kit. Then of course you'd have to get a new alignment. You'll be very happy with the outcome. I know you said money is a concern but it's worth the wait.

IMO cutting the spring adds heat and stress to the spring from the friction while cutting the spring. This IMO will cause for the spring to not function to its fullest amount and/ or will just not hold up the weight as you are taking away some of its strength that was rated for as many coils the spring was designed for. Like above IMO best route would be to just simply buy all new suspension struts,shocks, and springs for best ride comfort and style.

This thread has LOTS of good info on cutting springs. Honestly, If you are a drag oriented street car like my car is, cutting stock springs (which are some of the best for drag racing) is probably the best way to go. And you won't "heat the spring" up at all if you use a cut off wheel. Running on cut springs for over a year and car rides smooth as hell and aside from too much camber due to stock c/c plates, car handles as good as a car with no front sway bar will lol.

If he's at stock ride height, he's gonna pull those things like 4 times at that rate lol.


Cutting springs is a cheap (free if you have the tools) way to lower the car. If you're trying to lower it 1.5" or so, cut just 1 coil. You'll be fine.
Then see how it handles and if you find the ride too bouncy, get some new struts.

Or you can wait til Sep 7th and buy my super duper rare springs. However, I don't know how much international shipping will be.

Adjustable coilovers, subframe connectors and a panhard bar would be a great "low budget" drop with the addition of slight tunability

if you're just street driving your car and don't push it terribly hard springs will be just fine. just respect the platform for what it is at any given point of modification and stay safe op.

on a side note you all are making me want to cut a spring before i have the cash to lower mine, damn. so 1 coil for the 96 cobra springs would be okay to cut?

I´ll just cut of 1 coil, and if its not good, i´ll just get a new set.

And money isn´t really a problem, but if i see the prices you guys can order something there, i would buy alot.
