Hello everyone. I was wondering if maybe someone could help me find out my problem I'm having with my 96 GT.

Okay so when I'm driving on the highway going anywhere from 60 and upwards, if I give it some gas and let off, I can hear
and feel some sort of grinding noise. It seems to come from right under my center console, so I'm thinking its my transmission.
My transmission is shifting shitty too. It takes a fat minute for it to kick into drive and shifts badly. I just got my U-Joints replaced.
It only makes this grinding noise when I'm going above 50 or so. It'll grind for about 5 seconds then stop but it just feels like
my transmission is going to drop off and fall onto the road.

Any suggestions?

'Going to assume auto "..when it shifts." When was the last time you flushed the fluid? Is it grinding like metal on metal or a shuddering? Does it only do this when it goes into OD?

Not knowing if you have tuned your tranny, or have a shift kit. It'd be hard to tell.

Yes it is an auto. I have not flushed the fluid since I have had it (a year and a half). Yes I know I need to but funds are low right now. (high school student) I believe it is a Shuddering type of grind. No tune, just all stock.

Ok, It sounds like the fluid needs to be changed. A month after I got mine it would shudder when it went into OD (45mph or higher). It felt as though the car was coming apart. I had mine flushed, and filled with new ATF + BG service. http://www.bgprod.com/products/transmission.html

I'm now 10K from that and it shifts like a champ. It was kind of hard to find a shop that offers the BG service.

But by no means let a jiffy lube style shop change your ATF..never.

Just changing the fluid may not do it, when we had our 96 explorer 5.0 it developed the shudder going into high gear, changed the fluid and filter a few times, even tried some Lucas tranny additive and it never went away

It was doing it for a good 20K miles when we sold it and never broke so I never bothered to pay the $$ to replace or rebuild the tranny

If you need to flush your fluids might as well try it and see if its the problem. Either way you have to do it eventually right.

start with changing the fluid, and don't get it flushed!
this is a common misconception, if there are any abrasive particles in there, flushing it will shoot them into the valve body and can cause damage.
just change the fluid, and let the filter/pump do their job.

if it still has these issues after a fluid change, it sounds like your transmission could be worn. could be a number of things.

so start with fluid change, and if the problem persists, you should have it looked at by a qualified transmission shop.

change the fluid in it and throw some trans-x in it as well. A lot of the shops that i deal with swear on the stuff. Its supposed to help with hard shifting and shuttering might be well worth it.
