I can't imagine why a better shifter would make your transmission whine. The only thing I can think of, is that if the little plastic cup the shifter goes into isn't there, then it might grind. I doubt that happened though.

I read that I shouldn't have shift stops set up for my transmission because it has internal shift stops and can easily damage the transmission so just leave them out. I took my bezel off yesterday and checked the shifter and both nuts that adjusts the shift stops were missing. I'm guessing the previous owner did this right? But I'm still experiencing 2nd gear grind only sometimes. Which is very annoying. So the only adjustable part of mgw orange shifter are the shift stops that can contribute to this?
This is how mine is set up. NO stops installed. Instructions mention this as an option because of above mentioned internal pertection. Grinding would be a clutch cable adjustment, throwout bearing, ect

No, he was definitely going waaay too far into gear in second and 4th, and not going far enough into gear in 3rd. Shift stops are very important on the t5/t45 cars. Which is what you have robb, unless you switched to a TR3650 which has internal stops.

You should have a borg warner t5. Tremec bought borg warner, but I was always told the t5 did not have shift stops. Either way, his car was definitely getting slammed too far into gear and would grind like hell, now that I adjusted the stops its perfect :)

OK, I got ya- I left mine off, didn't install them. I saw that option mentioned in the MGW T5 directions and e-mailed them. Thats how I got my opinion on it. Thanks again, always helpful. Appreciate it.
On a side note, without starting a new thread, What fluid are you using in your T5 gear box? Thats something else i contacted TREMEC/ Borg warner about- I've used Mobil1 automatic trans fluid for 15 years. They said at the time something called "Syncromesh" could be used too. My Mobil1 has been just fine with my 300K miles on the tranny. ust curious....

If I remember the capacity is like 2.3 quarts in the T5, and the guy I had rebuild mine said don't fall for the synthetic gimmick, etc. He told me to just use 2 quarts of Pennsoil dex/merc (I forgot which number specifically, any part store can tell you) and then top the rest off with some Lucas gear oil. Seems to be fine to me.

Manual transmission holds 5.6 pts. You can use what you want. I would bet my left nut it wasn't a Mustang shop who recommended Pennzoil & Lucus in the gearbox. Tremec/Borg Warner states that they recommend two fluids- Mobil1 automatic transmission fluid or GM Syncromesh.
To each, their own though- what ever floats your boat- different strokes for different folks-

It's in the instructions, but you adjust the shift stops to just barely be touching the shifter when it's fully in gear.
