anything catted is gonna be quieter. as far as a 96-97 fitting, yeah but it'll take alittle bit of modification to fit. Hangers are different. I have an o/r X off a 98 Cobra and was told by a mechanic (a guy that works on mustangs, races, builds them, etc.) that there is no way in hell that a Cobra midpipe would fit my car...boy was he wrong. Like a glove comes to mind ;D

Catless FTW!

About the mid-pipe...I put one on my car from an 03 cobra. I am pretty sure 96-04 4.6l are the same. Mine doesn't even have hangars. My brother has had 3 different mid-pipes on his car (99cobra) none of them had hangars either. So I am sure it will fit.

if you want an x-pipe, definetly hit up mark from upr, my catted x-pipe sound so much louder and alot more raspier than the stock h-pipe, he can cut you a deal on it

Yeah about the catless x, you will love it. Its hard to believe just how much louder they are
until you hear one in person. After the install of my UPR unit(which is for 96-98, there is no difference)
I was really impressed.

p.s. i got mine form greyhoundperformance on ebay and paid 150 shipped to my door.

Just throwing in my two cents but I can tell you from experience that an H pipe gives the Mustang more of a muscle car sound while the X pipe gives off more of the rice rocket sound you hear on some imports.
Dont get me wrong an X pipe will still sound badass but it will be a higher pitched growl.

Im acctually about to buy an off road H pipe from MAC.

No way in hell does an x pipe on a V8 Mustang sound like the "rice rocket sound". Magnaflow O/R X with Flowmaster 40 series here and it sounds badass.

no, im sorry, I was just saying the sound is higher pitched.
The rice rocket thing was overkill. I was just trying to explain the sound.

H-pipe- Old school V8 muscle
X-pipe- Raspy-exotic V8 muscle

If i ever get back on my feet (good job) im going to buy a o/r X. :dancing6: :dancing6: :dancing6: :dancing6: :dancing6: :dancing6: Cant wait till that day comes. Currently i own an o/r prochamber and the H pipes, but i need an X to get rid of the bLAT noise the o/r H makes.

the hangers are different, and the o2 sensor locations are a bit different. I have a 98 cobra mid on my 99 cobra. I couldnt run my rear 02s because the sensors hit the floorboards. The 98 midpipe was also different than the one for my 97. They will work, but not without modifications.

WHy not just buy the correct one?
