Wait.. timeout. Does this speed sensor thingie have anything to do with my cruise control. I just realized my cruise control suddenly doesn't work anymore either.

Could this be another problem? For the last two days i been trying to turn on my cruise and it hasnt worked.

No cruise control+ No working trip/mileage odometer

In all honesty I don't think I've ever activated my cruise control so I don't know the answer to your question. I think fix the odometer problem first and see what happens after that.

If the cruise doesn't work either then the problem is the plastic gear on the end of the VSS.
The Vehicle Speed Sensor is on the driver side of the trans. It has 1 bolt holding it in (10mm socket I think).
Once you pull it out of the trans, pop the C clip that holds the gear on the end of the VSS and the gear will pull off of the end.
The stealership should have a replacement, or you can order 1 from the catalog.
Since you have 3:73 gears you'll need the white 23 tooth.
Also ck the o-ring on the base of the VSS for pliability and cracking. You don't want to go back under there again for a leak.
Another easy fix. you can do this.
good luck man

So can this one sensor cause the odometers to stop working?

The speedo and odometer are electrically driven from the computer.
the VSS converts the rotating trans to an electrical signal the computer can use.
Your sensor is probably good just the replaceable gear on the end of is stripped. It's plastic, go figure.

im going to change the speed sensor first $20 .. pretty cheap.
Also someone said something about a white 23 tooth one ? Can i get the replacement speed sensor itself with 23 tooths from a parts store?? I was going to advanced auto

Or will i need to order a 23 tooth one online? It seems auto store only stocks 21's right?

Now when i pull this thing out will anything leak out???????????? :dontknow:

You don't need the whole sensor! Just the plastic gear on the end.

You can order the 23 tooth if you want or ck at your local ford dealership.
You might get a little dribble of tranny fluid out when you pull the sensor out. Not much at all. You might need a drip pan.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to roll under there before you buy the gear just so you familiar..
If you want me to talk you through it, send me a pm and I'll give you my #.

I think i might be fine. What im not sure of is: If i go to a ford dealership parts place how do i ask for this piece? Will they try to give me a stock 3.27 plastic gear or do i just say i need a 23 tooth speed sensor gear?

my 23 tooth is a white gear...

Did you get it directly from a ford dealer? From what i found online the white gears online aren't made by ford.

This is confusing..

I got mine from the ford dealer, but the guy did say it is not normally a ford part. I believe he said it was a dodge gear.
