I need to replace my front pads and today a drove around and got a couple estimates and they were all around $200. I was told that if I get new pads I have to get new rotors or have the old ones machined. Is this true? I was going to do it on my own but I read that I would have to bleed out half of my brake fluid and I don't have the knowledge to mess with that.

1. If you brake pedal is hard, and does not sink all the way to the floor, and if you don't disconnect the lines, you don't have to bleed anything.

2. If your rotors look glazed, or you feel vibration/pulsing when on the brakes, you will need to resurface the rotors. Otherwise, it's not really necessary.

Get the pads, swap them over, make sure you properly bed them in after you finished (procedure on this link http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm), and you should be fine.

If I was replacing my brakes pads I would either get my rotors cut or get new ones..... It would suck 5,000 miles later if your rotors started to warp..

are you buying stock replacement pads? If so go to autozone. they are the only ones i believe that have a lifetime wear warrenty. Otherwise do what you wish. Never heard of bedding your pads, interesting. Guess it really only matters for racing and not DD.

It matters for everything. If the pads are not fully bedded, they will never stop at their full potential. Also, if you don't bed the pads, you will wear them out quicker.

Thanks for the info. I will try doing it myself

i recently had my brakes machined and replaced pads, you can save some money and bring your rotors to a shop already off your car. i had all 4 rotors resurfaced for $60, then i re-installed everything at home.
