ok guys be easy on me im new to mustangs. i have a 97gt and its running or x pipe and flows. it has started smoking a little if it sits idle for awhile once you start going again its fine. im being told its cuz i need the mil eliminator on the exhaust? does this sound right to any of you? im being told its dumping extra gas because its missing the o2 censor and it does seem to use a bit of gas. it runs awesome no stumbles no shakes no odd sounds etc. thanks

does the check engine light come on?

MILs would work to fix the check engine light. At the end of the day the only way to truely fix that problem is to have a tuner turn off the rear o2s and the tune the car.

MILs circulate the exact same information back to the computer, so MILs themselvs cause the car to run rich.

Smell the smoke. whats it smell like? unburnt gas?
look at the smoke. what color is it?

How many miles are on your car? It could be your engine getting old and oil sneaking past the rings at idle. Once your engine warms up, the rings swell and seal, stopping the oil from sneaking past into the combustion chamber.

anyways, give us a little more info on the car, we'll be able to clear things up for ya. :)

white smoke kinda has a smell cant really id it tho. car only has 80xxx original miles and no for a fact the motors got 44xxx on it. and ya its not all the time just at idle and no weird smells while driving never over heats. the smell isnt burnt oil or coolant and not using any oil? yes the check engine light is on and have had it checked out i know it needs the mil eliminator just didnt know if that could cause my issue

okay, than it is probably running rich.

you can always pull your plugs and determine how rich it really is running.

Mine does the same thing but it's oil....either bad rings or bad valve guide seals, in my case. Try the tune first, if anything you'll get more power Haha. That's because import guys think they're crap don't stink. Welcome to the forum.

eh. we have our moments of chaos... lol.

but i highly doubt you need a re-build.

running without o2s makes the CEL come on, some say the car runs richer with the CEL on... i dont know about that...

also, your cats arent taking care of unburnt fuel in the ehxuast...

finally, you're sitting at idle. ... your thorttle plate is closed... your car is sucking air through a straw. the OEM tune may work fine in Detroit, but wherever you live it might be a little off....

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I suggest putting cats and rear o2s on. I also suggest leaving the rest of the emissions systems in tact.

thanks man sucks about your engine, but hey time to build it the way you want. theres not a decent shop that tunes domestic anywhere near me! anyone have any experiences with those programmers with preset tunes? i think american muscle has one?

in all seriousness....

Step one:
pull your plugs. determine if the car is running dangerously rich.

If yes:
Step two:
Take car to a dyno shop to have the rear o2s turned off and it properly tuned.

If no:
Step two:
Save your money and do something else with the car... who cares if it puffs a few fuel-farts when you first fire it up.... ? :)

Welp got the compression and leak down test and passed with flying colors. Also had the mil eliminators show up there on and got some tuning and everything seems good as new! Thanks for the advice guys
