So took 2 darn days but got my clutch in and the car chatters from a dead stop in 1st and reverse only. I got the SVE mongoose kit from 5.0 Resto which came with clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing. Now I didnt get my flywheel resurfaced because it had no hot spots and I greased EVERYTHING, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, bearing retainer shaft, even the fingers of the pressure plate where the throwout bearing would touch. I torqued the pressure plate in a star pattern but at 25 ft/lbs not the 23 required because my torque wrench didnt go down that low. I can only come up with a few options on why I have chatter. 1) I got grease on the flywheel by accident. 2) Maybe...just maybe I warpped the pressure plate. 3) My clutch cable is stretched out. I have a double hook quadrant and I have to put the cable on the farthest hook because its too long to go on the first one and my firewall adjuster is almost all the way to the firewall. So, 3) maybe its an adjustment problem.

well man, im taking my to the shop for the same problem.

let me explain why it does this.

our model of mustang has a multi pronged pressure plate, which makes it easier to push and use.

older models only had 3 prongs.

if there is any single bit of irregularity in our pressure plate between any of the prongs, it will chatter and make noises..

i dont think there is a fix, except cutting your losses and buying a new setup..

it sucks, but mines under warranty, so im good.

Yea but there are many factors as to why there might be chatter...so many variables to consider. I was going to do a nice easy 300 mile break in period but if its just grease I might as well beat it till it burns away or the fingers are forced to wear evenly. Chatter is weird, depending whats making the chatter, it can go away with age/break-in or get worse. The clutch works great and I could live with the noise....its not that bad.

wait till after its broken in. before you draw conclutions. my space stage 2 went for over 1000 miles before it stopped chattering. it still chatters in reverse (which, from what i can tell from other spec owners [haha, that sounds racist] that its very common.)
always pay the $15.00 to get your flywheel resurfaced.

+1

Also IIRC the pilot bearing and throwout bearing come pregreased and you're not supposed to grease the bearing retainer because the grease will collect dirt and cause it to wear faster.

Yea I understand the importance of machining the flywheel but I was in a tight bind being it was new years weekend and a lot of places were closed and I absolutely needed the car for work on monday. I would of done it the right way if had seen any hot spots but there were none...I know this doesnt mean it was perfectly "true" but I figured i'd take my chances. My mustang only mechanic also told me that if there isnt any hotspots then take a sanding block to it and just rough it up a little (he had done it lots of times) , which I did. The only reason I put grease on the pilot bearing was to pack up the space behind it to hammer it out but it was taking forever and it spun great so i just said F it. I didnt know not to grease anything else. I didnt use high temp grease and I can smell it burning sometimes so maybe its just that and it needs to burn off. The problem has seemed to get a little better so maybe it will go away completely. :dontknow:
