I have a 96 gt with an auto transmission (4r70w) that is about to go out on me. Where should i buy a new or slightly used one from? I am looking to get over 300 hp when i completely finish my engine so should i get a performance one? I know a guy that has an auto out of a mach1 (4R75W) would this work in my car? I would love to have a 5speed try a swap maybe? :dunno:

Do you want a 5 speed or an automatic...I'd worry about that question first.

+1..... I would love to drop a 5 speed into my auto car, but dont feel like messing with a swap.

As for where to get a good auto.... I would just take the one in the car to a local reputable shop and have them do a rebuild. I would also at this time get a PA Valve body, upgrage the clutches/bands and also a new converter. In the long run it will save you a lot of $$$$

how much generally would a re build run on my 5spd? I guess is depends on how extensive the rebuild is, right? Like what usually goes into a rebuild on a tranny?

Thanks,

Well I have an 2002 gt engine and transmission just sitting in my garage. Is it possible the swap the 3650 in to my car or would it even be worth it?

You can do a 3650 if you get a speedcqal to deal with the electronic speedo, otherwise it's a bolt-in.

The Mach 1 trans is computer controlled, not sure if it'll work in a SN... I do know it is the absolute toughest AOD variant ever made by Ford, and worth about 1k on ebay.

a Mach 1 is a 4r70w just like the other cars... no 4r75w

the 4r70w can ve made VERY strong... maybe even more so than a 4l60e froom an f-body

hell im running one and it should be fine... its fully built by Pual Svinicki though

He is right, the 2004 Mach 1's got the 4R75W, my Lightning had a 4R70W untill it went Ka-BOOM in late 2003, where they installed a 4R75W at the dealer.

Sorry but the mach 1's had the 4R75W. They have a bigger drum in them than the 4R70W... thats the only main difference.

On the flip, my friend with a supercharged pi gt putting around 475 to the rear tires is still running the stock 4R70W trans. Thats been going good for about 2 years at that power level.

There is slight differences between the 4r70w's from 96-98 and the 99 ups are the same i think... the 98 and the 99 up are the same i think other than the electric speedo thingy.

Resurrecting the thread here; The Mach 1 in 03 had the 4R70W, in 04 they upgraded to the 4R75W just like the Marauder. These vehicles had the exact same drive train when it came to automatic transmissions. The Marauder had a different upper intake is all that was different. As for the difference between the 70 and 75; reverse sun shell is stainless steel design and gear set is hardened with bearing improvements, the pump was improved, new intermediate piston assembly and solid sealing rings, there's a different ring gear for the speed sensor.

All Gen 2 Lightning came with a 4R100, they never came with a 4R70w or 4R75W. Gen 1 Lightning E4OD only. The 4R75W first came out in 04.

In order to install a 4R75W in your 96 GT you will need to change the pin out of your main transmission connector on the pass. side of the Trans. Then you will need a different speed sensor and last you will need a custom built program to run it properly or it will shift through the gears early.

The 96 4R70W was the first improvement from the AODE/4R70Ws from 92 - 95. The case was improved for better oiling and strength. They are still not considered good enough for real high hp. In 98 the Trans was improved again. The valve body in 99 was then the next big improvement. In 01 the transmission was again improved slightly and better valve body. 03 and 04 were the last improvements and where you get the 4R70E in 03 and 4R75W in 04. If you want a good transmission to start out with for any type of performance then I would start a 99 or newer. For any real serious power I would start with a 4R75W. I've got a couple of them running in the 9s right now. http://www.blueovalchips.com/index.php?action=category&id=4

so did the 4r70e and 4r75w come in gt's also? or just mach 1's?

Hey also, quick question. Did the Torque Converters Change form 96-98-99-04? if so let me know. I'm looking at swapping in a 4v motor either mark8 or cobra b head and i would like a little higher stall for it. Plus i'm cheap lol.

Just Mach 1's, Marauder's, and trucks.

The Marauder converter should flash to nearly 3k, but you wouldn't want to rev it too much.
