Just thought I would run this past you guys. This project would be at least 2-3 years out. I need to finish my 1966 Coup first.

Yesturday we went out for pizza. When we came outside there was a 03/04 F-150 Lightning next to my 03 Explorer. I stood there and looked at the two of them and said to my wife, "what do you think about putting a drive train out of a Lightning into the Explorer"? She said that would be cool and left it at that.

I mentioned it to her again this morning, and she seems to be entertaining the idea. I told her it would have to be made into a 2wd from 4wd. She said that if I got her another car she would go for it.

What do you guys think. I think it would be unique. I don't know if it has been done, but I am sure it has been. If I can think of it, anybody can. The Explorer and the Lightning are pretty much the same size. Mine is a 4.0 V6 so it would take some Kmember work, but one out of a Lightning might bolt right in.

that would be pretty cool, why dont you keep your explorere now, and just see if you can find a 2wd explorer from the south in good condition and just use that, and pick up a smashed lightning

I would get a wrecked Lightning. If I only learned one thing from this swap with my 66 coup, that is buy a parts car. Also by the time I was ready to do this my Explorer would have well over 100k on it.

Ford made one a few years back, i think they called it Thunder or something... i used to have picks of it on my old computer... i'll look and see if i stored them on my drive. It had the lightning appearance pkg and engine etc. It was in a magazine probably 7-8 years ago.

I googled it but only came up with this copy from truck trend. Its a 98 Expedition that has the Lightning body but not the engine.

Finish what you got and then play with it later. Keep your eyes open for a wrecked lightning tho, cuz you could part it out if you change your mind on the project. just a thought.

hmm.. that seems like the easier alternative to put one in a Expedition... The Explorer swap on the otherhand, would take some
work methinks.

I don't see it as being that easy. Maybe to an Expedition, the smallest framed vehicle to come with the 5.4L. I don't know if there is the room in the Explorer, the biggest motor you can get in it is the 4.6L 2V. the 5.4 is a much taller motor. I don't see it as being that fruitful either - Lightnings can do intake, throttle body, full exhaust, pulley, and then you need to crack the motor open and stuff forged components in there.
