My oil pressure needle has been actling a little odd recently. Its been as low as covering up the enitre N in [NORMAL]..

I do a ton of commuting every day from school and work and my car has 196K on it. Will easily be at 200k before the summer.

I keep a constant eye on my oil level since she does tend to drink it pretty quick.

Im just nervous with all of the commuting I do daily.. Is the pump going out?

Any thoughts?

I'd be eyeballing that oil sending units' condition first but, a weak pump is certainly not out of the question.

or the piston's rings are on their way out.

????? There is no direct oil pressure applied to the piston rings. I have had a couple cars that had worn piston rings but had plenty of oil pressure.

It's very possible though, with the mileage/age, that there are crank, journal or cam bearings with excessive clearances causing the pressure drop. Worn piston rings is not a viable indicator.

The oil pressure gauge is an idiot light... Replace your sending unit. I highly doubt your pump is going out.

yeah, find a friend with one, or go purchase a aftermarket oil pressure gauge, and check it that way. the gauge on our cluster is no more than a dummy light, it energizes at 6psi of pressure, and if below six, it will read nothing. more than likely your sending unit is out. if you are worried about it though, grab a proper guage and test it.
