Has anyone tried to paint they're side mirrors with a rattle can? I've seen some sprays @ auto parts stores but dont know how effective this method is.

if time is taken, a rattle can paint job can be just as well done as if you had it done professionally. just remember the more time put into prep and taping the better it'll turn out

mine started out as white. since i'm not going hardcore show car what i did for prep was clean the whole area i'd be spraying. soap and water to get the dirt off then used some brake clean after that. rubbing alcohol works great too. next step was to tape off the area i didnt want sprayed so for me the actual lenses. once it was all prepped up it took me about 3-4 light coats to completely cover them. wait about 10 minutes in between each coat and be sure not to put to thick of a layer on or else they'll orange peel like a biatch. if you got any huge imperfections like scratches i'd start with a lower grit sand paper to work it out then work your way up to a real fine grit so blend it all back together

nope i havent but here's a little better write up i just found

Hello, this is not a extremely difficult job. You just need to take your time doing it.

I would first recommend you tape off any part of the mirror you do not want sanded or painted.

To make the mirror come it's best and last a long time, do the following:

Get yourself some 120 & 220 grit sand paper.

Start roughing up that green paint with teh 12o grit paper. Try to make the sanding even across the whole mirror. Meaning, do not concentrate the sanding in one area as this will show in the new paint.

When done roughing up the paint, clean it off real good with either IPA (alcohol) or a damp cloth. You don't want any depris when painting.

Get yourself some spray primer, spray a nice even coat ovedr the area wanting to be painted. Once dried, take that 220 grit paper and sand the primer down, not completely, but enough to get the surface nice and smooth.

CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN

Take a Dupli-color spray can of your cars color and spray the mirror down with nice even strokes. Allow to dry per can instructions. It may take a few coats (2-3) to get it even.

When paint is dried, spray some clearcoat protector on it. (may take 2 coats). Allow to dry.

Sometimes you can wet sand the clear coat with some fine 400 grit paper inbetween coats, but might not be needed for just a mirror.

The important part is to take your time, and have patience. It will take you about....2-3 hrs including drying time to do this.

good luck with the project and looking forward to seeing some pictures when its done!

I bought a spare set of mirrors awhile back to paint them, only problem is my car is the laser red so it isn't as easy as just buying duplicolor (they simply dont make it since it's a tri-coat)

I may just end up sanding them smooth and painting them a nice gloss black and a few coats of clear, should still look a bit better then OEM finish.

I repainted mine in satin black. I tried my spare one in the touch up paint for my car, but it turned out too dark.
