So I bought a new center console and pad for the storage compartment from the junkyard and had to paint them black because they were a charcoal color. For some reason the paint wont stick that well and is already flaking off of the armrest pad. I'll list how I prepped and painted please let me know what I did wrong.
1. Cleaned all parts with dish soap and water with blue SOS pad/sponge
2. let air dry and also blew off with compressed air
3. Cleaned again with MF towel and 3M adhesive and wax remover
4. Sprayed 2 coats of Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter and let dry.
5. 3-4 coats of satin black Duplicolor Vinyl and Interior paint.
I let them dry for about 2 days in the garage but it was about 40-50 degrees outside, so I wonder if that has something to do with the paint not curing correctly. Also where the paint's coming off is where your right elbow will usually rest while driving and also where I would brace myslef when getting in and out of the car, so it is a high wear area. Is this just part of painting interior pieces or did I do something wrong?

How long did you let the adhesion promoter dry before spraying color?

I would take a light 500 grit and give them something to hold onto. AS they said it will be hard to do because of the amount of traffic it has already had on it, and that it will continue to have.

I would consider getting some black material and just covering it with some glue myself.

I painted my steering wheel airbag and my armrest a couple months ago. The steering wheel looks great. The armrest is flaking off and there is black gunk all in my car. I even did more prep work and put more coats on the armrest. Im begining to think painting the armrest is a waste of time.

the problem is how much it flexes when you put any wieght on it and the oils in your skin make it break down faster. This on top of the fact that you are painting a piece that has had 10 yrs to of exposure to oily skin already. As he said if you want it to look factory then get the same color but again you can cover it with some material that matches your interior and call it a day.

or you can do like I did.

I like how u did that ttocs, unfortunately I have no leather in my car so wrapping that would look stupid for my application. Guess Ill just keep on spraying. Thanks guys, and yes I looked for a black armrest cover but could only find this one.

I went with one of those Redline leather covers just for this reason. That armrest/cover gets a lot of work so I doubt any paint/dye will last forever.

I was lucky to find a black center console when I did my interior conversion. However I painted a lot of pieces such as my airbags...and yes they continue to flake off over time. However, all I do is clean them up and give them a quick spray and its good as new. I use semi flat black duplicolor vinyl and fabic spray, perfect match to the stock black interior.

That is why my first recomendation was just to use the black fabric. The bottom of the arm-rest just unscrews so if you get a material that can stretch a little all you need to do is use a little spray glue, pull and tuck the extra under the cover that you screw back on and it will last as long as you want i to.

Thank you. I was just looking at these the other day and was debating on the flat or gloss black. Looks like I'm going with the flat based on your recommendation.

Yea when U go to the store you'll see that duplicolor only has a gloss and flat black, just get the flat colored top and you'll be flabbergasted at how well it matches.

the gloss looks more like the 94-95 black. the flat black looks more like the later model black. I used the flat black, since I was dying everything in the interior, so it didn't matter if it matched any existing parts. I think the color came out just right.

AR, did you paint the same piece I did? If so, how does it hold up and did you do anything different than me as far as prep and paint?

I painted the same piece you did and it ends up looking like sh1t after a while, also dont try to paint the steering wheel, the drivers airbag is fine but the wheel sucks.

Like everyone else said, those parts take a lot of wear, and have a high flex rate compared to all the other interior pieces. Regardless of what you paint/dye it with, its going to spider and crack and expose the under-color.

Get a hunk of leather from a Mercedes or Volvo at the junk yard. Its easy to cover it... spray glue, wrap leather, and replace the mount plate.

well all the SN black is the same i believe, the new edge use a charcoal color which is a lot lighter.

I hope so, the stock interior color is pretty flat i think until you gloss it up with whatever product.
