The intake ports should be a dead giveaway on the heads. what vehicle did the block come from? Look at the main caps and see if they have dowels wedged between the caps and the block if so, its a windsor, if not its romeo and should have jackscrews that you can tighten or loosen once you take the sidebolts out of the block.

Im not exactly sure, but it shoudl be on the inside of the head on the bottom, towards the middle of where the cam housings would be. Mine said PI right around that area. If you were to sit the head down like it were to sit on the block, look down inside of the head and it should say PI on the bottom area there. Not sure how else to describe it..::shrug::

look at the ports on the heads to determine if pi or not, PI are square while the NPI ports are tear drop. You can also count the cam cover bolts on the heads to determine romeo/windsor. The Windsor have more (13) vs the Romeo (11) if my memory is correct.

Windsor castings, blocks & cyl heads both, will have a large "W" cast into them somewhere. The blocks markings are in the top of the block under the intake and in the front behind the timing cover. The heads are marked in the rocker area between the two center cylinders.

the windsor castings have a "W" stamped on the passenger side of the block near the rear plate with a casting number. SOME windsor castings have a "W" in the intake valley. please note that romeo and windsor timing covers are different. the water pump bolt is slightly offset by .250 of an inch. 4.6 f-150s are windsor along with some explorers. most all 99' mustangs were windsor and had a special cast number for serpentine routing. then after 99 they went back to romeo plant. check for valve cover bolt areas as Bob said and look for the oil filling snout. driver side is romeo and windsor are passenger. P.I have a trapezoid'ish look and N.P.I have a tear shaped intake ports.

Yes, you can mix and match heads, I've got windsor heads on a 96 romeo block, the windsor heads have different size studs for the timing case cover so you'll need to find new bolts/studs for that.

Also the windsor valve covers have more bolts with a 13/14 bolt pattern where the romeos have 11 on both sides and aren't interchangeable.
pm me what you want to know willis, I'll let you know.
