i know ive asked this before but is there a diff from the npi block to the pi block besides itll give me higher compression? im only asking because when i get my heads fixed over the winter, if i were to have them pull the block whats the difference for machining that block as opposed to my 01 block and getting a forged kit(pistons and rods and what not)
between the blocks themselves? for the most part they are identical. the 96-98 an 01-04 blocks are mostly the same (Romeo blocks), and the 99-00 blocks are the same (Windsor Blocks). differences between the windsor blocks and the romeo blocks are almost unnoticeable unless you actually crack them open, and then you will see slight differences in the main bearing caps. meain bearings are also different between the two, and the oil filter housing gasket is different too.
if you are talking about an assembled Romeo vs an assembled Windsor shortblock, then there are more differences. on the Romeo's, the piston pins are held in with clips, on the Windsors they are pressed in. the dish in the piston is different between the 96-98 and the 99-04 (some people say there is a difference between the 99-01 and the 02-04 piston dish too, but i dont know if thats true or not). the rod caps are slightly different, the cranks are either 6 bolt (romeo) or 8 bolt (windsor)
everything else is pretty much the same, i think the coolant drain plugs are in different locations on the windsor vs romeo blocks. im sure im forgetting something tho.
and for the record, from 92-10 (i think it was 2010....whatever was the last year they had the 4.6), all 4.6L blocks (Teksid, WAP, Windsor, Romeo) use the same engine mounting locations, alternator mounting location, and head mounting locations, so technically, you can swap any of the heads (2v,3v, and 4v) onto any 4.6L or 5.4L block with very little or no modifications needed.
