Just gonna drop this here to warn all you guys using or thinking about using plastidip on your car....

Ive personally used it a lot and never had any problems but this guy I follow on IG had a bad experience with it..

25 weeks ago he plastidiped his roof

Well last week he started posting pictures where the plastidip had got so hot it started peeling

Problem was that by the time it got that hot it already baked onto the paint!

Luckily the story isnt a complete disaster. . He was able to sand the roof down completely and wrapped it in gloss black vinyl...

Car didnt really look like it was in the greatest condition paint wise, anyway. I was going to do it to mine but the told me to paint the car first (it needs it) so It won't stick to the paint.

Ah, the joys of crystal white. Everyone knows that color gets cancer. Why you would spray something on it, is beyond me lol

I dont think its the plastidip... I think its the crystal white. We all know it peels to begin with.

The paint didn't look like it was in great shape anyways.

I'd only use plasti dip as a temporary (tester) or for small items.
Or if my paint was in poor condition and I just wanted something that looks better. Like in a situation where it couldn't look any worse.

You should be fine.. I doubt this happens often like I said ive used it plenty of times without problem..

White paint always seems to have problems.. especially GM white paint but no one really seemed to have great white paint back then

All mid 90s cars had shit paint. It was a change in EPA rules and a water-based formulation. Most average mustangs of that time had paint issues.

I beg to differ. My DFG looked great and I was always getting surprised compliments to find out it was a stock color, and the stock paint. I think at a bare minimum if I was going to dip part of my car I would wax the hell out of the areas to be done. Even just the chemicals used to expel the material can cause problems paint finishes but I have heard of issues here/there with plastidip. Its not completely harmless like everyone likes to preach and can cause issues.

I'm no expert but I have a feeling the dip didn't cause this.

you still can, thousands of people dip their cars in Florida and Cali all the time with no problems.

it's extremely rare, it's only ever known to cause issues on paint that's already screwed up or poorly done. I've seen white on our cars just flaking right off from age so I don't think it was the dip in this case.

Upon further inspection, this picture tells the tale of improper prep work! You wouldn't spray paint on an unprepared surface why would anyone think plastidip would be any different? Look at how the paint is sticking to the dip. This happened because the paint was already [or on the verge] of flaking off. Crystal White sn95's [as onyx said] are notorious for this issue.

My paint:

I'm with Mr OnyxCobra on this one.

I have no doubt the paint was already in bad shape.. I just wanted to share the story..

Like I said ive used plastidip plenty of times and this by no means scares me off from using it again..

As far as prep you dont have to sand paint for plastidip.. just wash it hit it with a tack cloth and spray

you'll also want to remove any oils/wax from the paint if you want the dip to last a while. and thank you white95 for that vid, exactly what I was talking about. but really it was the dip, don't you guys know Performix mixes in brake fluid with their Dip now?
