my son's o1 neon timing belt broke while he was driving it. it has an interferance head and 2 intake valves made contact with the piston. i took the head off, and i know there are at least 2 bent valves. (front wheel drive engines SUCK). on the piston in question there are 2 small, very light contact marks from the intake vlvs. they are barely enough to catch a finger nail on. what can i do about them? i really don't want to pull the piston if i don't have to. thanks in advance.

I was reading up on it in a Engine Builders book and they say that it shouldn't be a problem. Then on another site i also read that it will cause Hot Spots.

"When doing this, be careful not to carve on the piston. Any cuts or scratches will cause hot spots, and in the long run, trouble. If you happen to scratch the top of the piston, get some 600 wet-or-dry sandpaper and buff off all of the scratches. DO NOT sand on the piston with paper any coarser than 600. It?ll make the situation only worse."

Took that off the net.

Someone else chime in here guys

i say grab the pistons in question clean them up as best you can, get new valves, check to make sure the guides aren't broken, and go.

its a neon, not a race car, it will be fine.

punch him in the face and tell him never beat on the car and he will be fine.
it will cause hotspots.
so long as he's not going WOT on a daily basis it will be the same reliable tank it once was.

i had an eclipse (exact same motor but untake is on the back and exhaust is on the front) for about 5 years before i got in to the muscle thing. Just take the head off (which is absolutely simple) maybe a an hour or so. depending on how bad the valves are some machine shops can make them straight again. put a new head gaasket, timing belt and slap it back on.

PLEASE put new valve stem seals in it those are notorious for leaking and the car will smoke like a siv. and get the Fel-Pro gasket kit and replace everything in the kit.( it comes with a MLS gasket)

"Craftsman are good starter tools but when you grow up and wear big boy pants with big boy skills your gonna want something better" Guess you should walk before you talk. lol, D
