After spending about 4 hours on one tail pipe I called it quits for tonight. Thanks for SVTurbo 98 for his write up. Really made a difference.

Only question I have is I noticed there are still sanding scratches in the pipe. Is this because I didn't work my way up slowly enough? I used his progression of grits but I guess I need to spend more time? Is there a way to correct it without starting from square one?

They look good, but I think you need to spend more time sanding. I dont know the progression of grits you used, but the finer ones are very important to smooth it out REALLY good before you polish. I'm going by what I know from resurfacing headlights. Your sanding is most important, it'll show when you're finished.

My progression followed the stickied thread at the top.

220 --> 320 --> 400 --> 600 --> 800 --> 1000 --> 1500 --> 2000

I may go back over them with the 1000 to 200 again. see if that helps. I hate always being pressed for time when I'm working on my car.

1000 to 2000 again would probably smooth them out better. just take your time. Your work really shows in a job like that.

As I started the other pipe i noticed that the scratches that are visible in the other already finished pipe are also visible on this one. However this is only the first grit (220) and the scratches are opposite to the direction I've been sanding. They must be a lot deeper than what I originally had thought. My guess is should have started with coarser sand-paper.

I just took a 3in buffer and pad with some metal polish to mine while they were still on the car, did what I couldnt reach by hand, up until the rear tires. They shine, and that looked good for me :)
