Hey all, so im taking my heads off to get some helicoils put in and the idea of getting my heads ported suddenly crossed my mind. I do have the GT 40X heads but I really dont know to much as far as whats involves, IE new valves, pushrods, all that stuff so im looking to get my heads flowing better. If anyone has any info as to how much should be taken out, or what it entails please let me know. thanks :TY:

You won't need different pushrods or different valves. Changing valves is an additional operation, not part of porting. But do get a competition (3 angle) valve job plus a 30 degree back cut on the intake valves.

Pocket porting is done in the areas underneath the valve heads. Then there is also porting usually at the opening of the ports to match the intake gasket. This port matching is also blended back into the runner about 1 inch. The intake manifold and exhaust manifold are also matched as well. If you are running EFI the ports in the head can be cleaned up all the way to the valve since you are not worried about fuel suspension like with a carbed intake.

Usually big gains are obtained from working the short side radius. This is the bottom of the port floor where it turns down to the bowl/pocket. I don't know if the X heads have any issue there though but it is a popular area on many heads.

The valves could also be unshrouded in the combustion chamber and if you want to get picky you can have all the chambers matched for volume.

You might need a new tune after extensive head working.

A good head porter will know what to do with the heads.
