As some of you may know Ive been chasing a problem w/ the Cobra since mid May. Coil, wires, spark plugs, TPS, TFI Module, Distributor was all ruled out over time. What it came down to was the Abaco DBX Digital Mass Air Meter...it went bad. Friend came over tonight w/ his C&L meter for a fox that he used to have, we Jerry rigged it up and the car started ran great and no longer breaks up at 4,000 RPMS. I am now ordering a PMAS meter and calling DBX to ask why their meter went bad. I had it a year in June

Special Thanks to Paul for selling me his 351 Distributor even though it was not the issue, but now I have a spare.

yeah thats for sure but now that Im done stressing over it I can enjoy it the rest of this summer. Just was hard to believe that a brand new meter would have gone bad. Oh well it is what it is. Cant wait to see what Abaco says about it tomorrow and what they will do for any type of refund or replacement

I've learned over the years that new parts fail. All. The. Time.

This is even true of uber-expensive ridiculous race parts. Trust me.

yeah I dont doubt that at all I just had not heard of anyone else having issues either. Ive had many aftermarket parts over the years and this was the first thing that failed on me. Its bound to happen sooner or later but that makes my MSD box and my DBX meter both dying on me in a few week time span.

You're really lucky. I've had $900 crankshafts with pilot holes drilled right through to the oil passages. $700 h-beam rods crack at 550 hp. $400 clutches spit pucks through the bellhousing at 400 hp. You name it - I've broken it.

Paul.

Yeah that sucks. Im sure I'll break parts once I do what I plan on doing for the Cobra next spring/summer. At least w/ breaking stuff you have a good idea of what it is from the get go, if its something in the rear end, the clutch, engine related it can all be assessed pretty easy for the most part. The problem with mine is that nothing broke (as in parts breaking) it was just some mysterious electrical issue and there were so many things it could have been that until everything had been gone through it was hard to pinpoint what it was. I will say that my friend said it was the meter before we discovered it actually was the meter. This is before I bought the distributor

Keep us posted on what Abaco says, because I was interested in possibly getting one. But I wont if they jerk you around.

I just got off the phone w/ them. Their meters have a 1 yr warranty I bought it 6-08-08 so its just over the one year mark but half of that time Ive had the meter the car was put up for the winter. They told me I can send it back and they will check it out and see what is wrong w/ it and quote me for a repair price. Depends on how much that will be if its not much I'll pay that and just sell it after. If its to much IMO to bother fixing it then they can keep the stupid thing. Ive had stock meters, C&L Meters, PRO-M meters and thats the only one that has ever given me any issues.

haha nope but now I have new Ford Racing ones on it. Those taylors are still good but I ripped the metal ends off two of them trying to get them off the plugs. that #8 cylinder is a beioch.

But my old set of Taylor wires did go bad. They were arching off the cap.

That is exactly why I tossed my less then a year old msd 8.8 wires. I had three of them rip. I just got tired of fixing them and replaced them with Taylors.
Glad you got your car up and running.

what did your friend have for a meter? Thats excatly what mine did. Every time at 4,000 RPMS it would go to hell.

Here is the jerry rig job until the PMAS meter comes in. The couplers on the DBX meter were to big to fit the C&L Meter and the old CAI set up I had which used the black hose you see (there's another piece) was for a 4 bolt flange Lighting meter so that wont work either so this is as good as it will get until the new meter comes. Should either be here tomrrow or monday. As you can see there is no filter on it so I have not really driven it much just a few miles up the road and to get gas just to be sure its going to run ok. Despite the fact it has a #42lb sample tube and #36LB Injectors it runs quite well.

glad to hear your problem got fixed. Sometimes the littlest of things can create the biggest of headaches..
I just noticed, this isn't "5.0 specific", maybe if your car has more problems the mods will have to create a "5.8 specific"
section... But i doubt anyone will move it. haha. It is, after all, still a pushrod. :eek:ccasion14:
