ok so i was looking at my car today and im thinking about plugging off the evap canister in the passenger fender well. i have a smog pump delete and no cats on my car. so the real question is whats this thing doing for me and is there any downside to plugging the vacuum line that runs to it?

if you plug the canister up,there will be no way for it to relieve the pressure.....also you tank will no longer be vented(which it has to be)

you can just disconnect the line that comes to the canister from the gas tank. just leave this open to the air which allows the extra tank pressure to be bleed off. the only down side is that technically it will lower your fuel mileage since your letting fuel vapor escape. were not talking about gallons. and i assume that you didnt buy the car for its fuel mileage anyway. ive had mine disconnected for years now with no ill effects at all. good luck

well if i plug the vac line that goes to it how would the gas smell get in the car?

Well, I'm assuming that you will still allow the tank to vent to the canister. And since you were just thinking of plugging the vacuum line to the canister so when the canister purge solenoid opens the gas vapors are discharged to atmosphere either in the fender or engine bay. Hence the smell of gas. If you plug the line going to the canister you will essentially will close off the venting system. What will likely happen is as you draw off fuel a vacuum will be created in the gas tank and unless there is a way to allow air in the tank it will start to collapse. Remember those experiments in physics class where the container collapses under atmospheric air pressure when the air was drawn out of the container.
