Dude, if your oil gage was fluxuating, you only had 1 quart of oil in it. You need to pay attention to your oil level. I will advise you to check your oil every time you fill up with gas.

Are you suppose to check it when the car is off or running?
WHen the car is off it shows virtually no oil. WHen the car is running it shows alittle over full.

Always have, so im not sure which one to look @.

So your saying that when the car is off it shows no oil on the dip stick??? If that is the case there are a number of things that could be going on. First thing i would check is to make sure you have the right dipstick.

Read post#4 His oil gage was "flicking"!!!!! He had no oil in the engine.

Off! To get a accurate reading you will want your car to be operating temp and then let it sit about 10-15 seconds then check the dip stick.

....on level ground

If you were down to 1 quart of oil I would say you have started destroying your cam/connecting rod bearings. I would seriously look at the oil you just drained and look for metal shavings. With 1 quart your motor would have made a nasty knocking sound. What I don't get is why (if you were low) the low oil light didn't come on either. Something is not right. I wonder if the motor isn't sludge(d) up. Might have to take a crash course and pull the valve covers and lower intake and peek around.
:dontknow: Never seen a low oil light on in my 97 GT. Im just confused :tard:
The car sounds fine though, so ill just keep up with the oil changes for now. The oil was just burnt black.. no shaving or metal inside. Just waterly and black.

How watery ???? Well if your oil gauge was bouncing around you could also have a bad oil pressure sender along with the low oil you discovered. You usually can get them for a few bucks. Usually pretty easy to change also. Yeah just keep up with it and watch out the back to see if any oil is being burned under throttle or when you start the car up.

I don't think 97 has the low oil sensor, i remember reading that 96 was the last year on SN's for that.

Did you change the filter? Thats the part i hate...hard to get my hands and filter wrench up there on the 4.6 2V.

That was really stupid. My car leaked oil and that was handy when I forgot to check. I personnaly try to carry two quarts of oil and some 50/50 coolant with me... because i used to leak both haha
