Been there, done that. Of course, the reason I get cautch in the rain a lot is because 1) my car controls the weather, and 2) Due to my speedster covers being on 9 months out of the year, I only put my top up if I know Im going to be in danger.
Due to the speedster covers, at 40-50mph, the rain will not hit you. However, anyone whos ever ridden in the back of a convertible will tell you that the air flow would simply get them soaked. In a sudden downpour where visibility is limited, I havent been able to go fast enough to test this. 1) is because going 20+ over in a sudden downpour is stupid and dangerous no matter how fast you want to get home and 2) the amount of humidity such a storm creates attacks the inside of your windsheild. Your wipers are on max, but the only way you can see is wiping the glass with a towle as you drive.
Now then, before anyone says anything, 1st time I drove in and out of several freak storms (small area coverage) 2nd time is started just as I got off work. I lived a mile and a half away, and due to the speedster covers, it would have taken longer for me to put the top up than to just drive home and park in my garage. That, and at the time my top had trouble closing (vinyl had shrunk after 11 years)
I do remember that porsche commercial, so its true to an extent, but if you get caught in traffic, or a light, youre stuck and everyones laughing at you.
