i know this might sound like a dumb question but.....the other day i was talking with this guy about gears...and he said that if you change your rear end gears it makes your odometer reading inaccurate. i was wondering if this was true?

for example about 2 years ago i had 3.73 put in my car....would this gears make odometer not read correctly. like would it say that i had more mileage then i actually do?

yes, it changes the readings on your speedmeter and odometer. you can get little plastic gears to fix it though and they are only like $10

yea i really have to get it fixed cuz my mileage seems way to high for it to be accurate.

Forget the plastic gears, they just chew up, ask me how i know, that and your speedo will still be off with certain ratios if its auto.
Go to Dallas Mustang or Brothers Performance and buy a Speedcal, job done. :thumb:

If your speedometer is correct, your odometer is, and vice versa.

The highest gear they make is a 23 tooth, and it's accurate for a 3:73 gear, it's also the weakest one, since it has the most teeth, and they'll sell it to you for 4.10's too, even though it will be off.

How could you not tell your speedo was off after a gear change? When I wen from stock gears to 3.73's just cruising along at what felt like 55 MPH, the speedo would read like 90 MPH.

yea i will probably get a speedcal instead of the plastic gear. i knew my speedo was off but never really cared that much about it. i knew how fast my local speed limits were so i never really worried about it

When I changed to 4.10's, my speedo was off 25mph. I swapped to the 23 tooth gear and it's still off by 15mph.

Im the same way. i got my 4.10s installed around 70k miles, i did the calculations and i figured i only have about actual 93k miles on the car while the odometer says 1166xx miles. thats like every actual mile you go the cars odometer adds .2 miles to that. yea it sucks oh well.

The white 23 tooth gear is only good for 3.55s, any lower gears will read off with it. I've been running a 23 tooth for a few years now with no problems, speedo seems just as accurate as stock too :thumb:
