FWIW, the damaged wires that were the culprits have been laying in the bottom of the ash tray underneath a bunch of change. So, if it helps anyone, here’s a picture of the 2 wires:

Yes, they were pinched off against the bell housing. The mechanic spliced in new wires.
And here’s the Speedo gear he removed! Or what’s left of it!!
