I just got the timing chain and cam today, the timing chain gives me three options, leave it at 0 degrees or 2 degrees in advance for earlier valve timing, and 2 degrees retard for later valve timing. Im im putting an E-303 cam and GT-40P heads.

Please research this a lot more...

From MY research, several people have told me that they found the most power fromtheir e-cam advanced 4*. The BEST way to install a cam is by degreeing it. Advancing or retarding the cam basically just changes the power in the power band. Advancing = lower rpm range and retarding = higher rpm range.

I know this post is old but.... this is one thing you want to be exact on. Putting a cam in just straight up is not what you want to do. Use a degree wheel and do it right the first time. Its not really that difficult to do. But like said before, advancing it will give you more low end torque and retarding it will give you more high end. I set my cam at 4 degrees retarded from centerline and it screams at the high end. I already have enough low end. And also check for valve clearance when you get the heads on. Thats the last thing you want to do is bend all your valves if you have to much lift. Its just an un-needed headache.

"Degreeing" the cam only verifies that the valve events occur at the specs stated in the cam card - basically that the cam is ground correctly and the alignment dowel is located appropriately. There is nothing that you can really "adjust" outside of the the pre-drilled holes for a couple degrees advanced or retarded. Sticking the cam in "straight up" is about all you can do really. The location of the dowel pin on the cam, the holes on the cam gear, and the keyways on the cam gear, crank gear, and crankshaft dictate "where" everything is going to line up.

...unless you have a fully adjustable cam gear such as the ones on a Jesel belt drive of course.

Yea installing it straight up is fine, but you should still degree it to make shure it is in correspondence to the spec card. So you know its exact. Any good engine builder would know that.

I have an E-cam and I would be pissed if I had advanced the cam 4*, like the internet myth states to do. I installed it straight up and I have plenty of low end. My low and mid-range is good and after ~5100, the cam behaves like stock, which is what the cam is advertised to do. Advancing it 4* would make it pull less in higher RPMs. If ever have the cam back out I will install it straight up again.

I have stock heads and stock intake, but I am swapping for a Cobra intake within a week or so just because I found a deal.

Ryno your heads and intake have a lot to do with your engine falling on its face at 5000r's; with aftermarket heads and intake i'm pretty sure people bring the E cam to 6000rpm no problem

Yeah, I know what you are talking about, but it doesn't fall on it's face, just pulls like a stock cam. I have GT40s sitting on the bench and I am changing to a Cobra intake within a week or so. Those two will help forsure.

Im the original starter of this thread, wow such a long time!!!

The cams are suppose to be pointing straight up, imo the best way to do it.

yeah it pulls like a stock cam because the heads and intake can't support higher RPMs, the difference with the new parts should be quite noticeable.
