Shift Kit Question

I recently had a Trans GO Intermediate Kit installed at AAMCO. I really like the way it shifts now, but I have heard that this might not be the best route. I had mentioned the J MOD to the mechanic at AAMCO but he still recommended this Trans GO kit.

My concern is that it may be harming my valve body as Ive heard in other posts. If thats the case I would consider getting a different kit. I was told that this site offers great torque converters (which i also want) and great automatic shift kits.

ive been running a Transgo shift kit through a 400hp car and no problems here. people just say what they "hear". why change it out and waste money if you have no problems? I HIGHLY suggest getting a tranny cooler!!

Oh, and as for torque converters I heard that BC Auto is the best too. Thats who ill be going through.

For starter's, it look's like it would bypass the converter circuit to feed it full bore all the time. Seems like a good idea, except it's regulated for a reason, like when you are at high load and low rpm, the pump isn't spinning enough to feed it, hence the bypass to keep the pressure constant.

In addition the transgo kit makes a bunch of retarded changes to the valve body that will do nifty thing's like let you shift into, any gear at any rpm. They drill a bunch of holes into the valve body to bypass the shift solenoids and accumulators, which are there for a reason.

Another thing I noticed about the transgo kit when I had one sitting here was the crappy finish on the valves, compared to the mirror-like finish on my brother's stock Ford valves.

Just because it makes cool chirping sounds when you shift gear's doesn't mean all is well. Before I did my brother's, I pulled it apart, went to Summit, got the kit, and compared and contrasted. There's nothing in a 4r70w that can't be corrected with a drill, yet the transgo kit insists on turning it into a engineering masterpiece or something. I use them in 700r4's all the time, they make a great product for that trans, their 4r70w kit blows nuts though.

Not to mention, the transgo kit is 125, modifying your own valve body is like 15 dollar's...

So should I keep it ? I also installed a 4 inch trans cooler with it by the way. But would it be a good match with a Torque Converter? I just want to make sure that everything i do to this car wakes it up more yet continues to be good daily driver in any conditions except snow.

Long term, I'm betting it will kill your torque converter clutch. But that's just me talking, I would ditch it. BTW, the wonderful people at AAMCO are the reason I learned how to rebuild auto's :hammer:

I know they are independently owned, but I had experiences with three of them. Your guy is probably a good trans guy, but modifying a valve body is probably outside his experience, like most mechanics, he's probably a regular pull and replace kind of guy, who can follow instructions, but not go off on his own.

Take it out, at part throttle in first gear and smash it. Does it hesitate for a brief moment, like a split second, then take off like a bat out of hell?

Does it ever take more than a blink to shift at WOT? In any gear?

I thought mine was slipping when it was trying to go into second gear...but then I realized that it was shifting into second at like 5500 rpms and that my npi beast wasnt making any power so I really wasnt going anywhere and it felt like I was slipping.

man that sucks, just got it too. I think it was around 200 dollars all together including the installation. I love the way it shifts but if there is some risk of having it I want it gone.

I would get the JMOD but I dont want to take it back to that guy at AAMCO if he doesnt know that the Transgo kits arent well built. Does anyone know of any good transmission shops in Michigan that could perform the JMOD?

A new valve body is probably mandatory unfortunately. Is there some reason you are unable to perform the work yourself? You would need a jack, stands, a ratchet, extensions, metric socket's, a drill, some drill bit's, a couple gasket's, and a bunch of fluid to do it. It really is super easy to do.

Or if you want, get a used valve body, send it to me, and I will do it for free, and take alot of pics for those wanting to do it but afraid.

I wish i knew a thing or two about a tranny. Right now im having a C4 rebuilt with a shift kit and the whole nine yards. COuld have saved me lots of money.
