I used a 89.5" belt to delete the smog pump, everything else is stock, but it isn't long enough to go under the idler pulley, is this necessary or can I run it without that pulley?

I think the idler is needed to help in alignment of the belt. The belt at the top of the motor has to travel a long way, the idler has edges to keep it aligned between the other accessories.
I think I used a 91.5" to bypass my smog pump when it started making noise. (all other accessories installed)

If you drive like granny you should be ok.
I don't think the belt will break as much as I think it'll just jump off. Then who know what it will wrap around.

I bypassed the idler pulley when i short belted my car. Put alot of ,non granny, miles on it without any problems. You'll be fine.
