Last night my car overheated at 2 in the morning, but the gauge said it was fine which is why I didn't know the car was hot until, I saw the smoke coming out the hood, and I lost power to my car.I almost rear ended a Car because my car had turned off while I was coasting so I couldnt tell it had turned off. Anyways once I got to the side of the road I saw the car was leaking all over but the engine wasnt leaking, and it wasnt that hot, no hoses were leaking so im assuming the radiator was leaking... Well I let it cool and limped it back home. Fast forward to this afternoon, I tried to see where it was leaking by putting some water in it, and letting it run... No water ever came out the car, and the upper radiator hose never had any pressure, I even drove the car around the block to see if it would get pressure, none. The hose got hot, but had very little pressure. Still no leaks.... then i just happened to look at my garage floor where the car had been sitting last night... and its got oil all over it. So now im thinkin ohshit. I looked at the bottom of my car while it was still running and my whole exhaust system and bottom of my car seems to taken a bath in oil.

Cracked head maybe? Fubared radiator too? Im planning on doing the 4v swap really, really soon now, but would like to have a vehicle to drive.

Re: So What did I break this time?

What was it that leaked? Engine oil? or Transmission Oil? or Coolant (has an oily feeling)

If the block overheated and you never felt the upper hose warm up, could be signs of a stickey thermostat, or a restriction in the radiator.

Iwould look in to the oil leak first and see where that is coming from.

Totally not bashing right now, but if you going to do a 4v swap soon, your going to have the same motor, just now with heads with double the parts, upper and lower intakes IMRC's and have to change some wiring stuff, so your adding more parts to the puzzle.

yeah I know im gonna be adding more parts to the puzzle, im just tired of this tired abused 2v thats in the car now, and for 350 I can get a Mark 8 engine. Originally when the car first overheated it was coolant, but it was brown with rust I guess. yesterday after the car had sat I noticed it was dripping a lot of oil.

My car just blew a seal on the rear of the transmission and was blowing white smoke EVERYWHERE. Check for oil around the front of your driveshaft/rear of transmission etc.

Re: So What did I break this time?

not to spoil your party but i seriously doubt you'll do a 4v swap anytime soon. you might have found a teksid but you need a ton more stuff, and plenty of time. i've seen you post multiple times that money is an issue for you, for that reason i'd look into actually fixing your current engine.

to answer your question though, first you need to do a pressure test on the cooling system, or pay a shop to, but it sounds like your car is boiling over instead of leaking. if its boiling over but the gauge isnt reading hot its pretty much guaranteed you have a stuck thermostat, and you need to change it before driving the car seeing as how you cant rely on the gauge.

the oily substance is probably coolant that was boiled out of the overflow tank and blown back from driving and the fan kicking on. fix the overheating issue then look into oil leaks. i'd also recommend an oil change, anytime a motor is allowed to get that hot alot of things are put under extreme pressure, head gaskets have a high rate of failure when the block is overheated, but you'd be steaming out the exhaust and overheating quickly. the oil gets very thin and looses its ability to lubricate when its heated, so i consider an oil change a must after a boil over.....

if reliability is what you are looking for i'd stick with the 2v, maybe swap in a newer PI longblock if you think yours is tired, although i doubt it is even barely broken in....

Re: So What did I break this time?

I got 181k on this engine. And I dont think it was well cared for. I've always wanted a 4v, so thats why I plan to do it. Yes money is a issue, but my wonderful mother is actually gonna pitch in on this project. I can get the engine for 350, and im kinda planning on the rest of the stuff being under 500 dollars. I have a write up that a guy did on a budget, and thats what Im going by.

I really cant afford a cobra, so I guess I kinda want to make one. I figure since my car will be "down", im gonna save money on gas and food since I wont be able to get anywhere to waste my money. Im probably gonna take the insurance off of it until its finished too.

Haha Im sorry. I just love the 4v cars. I hate to be a fad follower, but in my opinion the 4v is the better swap, if im going to go through all the trouble.

Re: So What did I break this time?

So today I figured what heck...I drove the car down to the bank and kragen...and its really hot today, but the car didnt overheat. BUT I did notice some smoke coming out of the car. And the back bumper, and trunk are covered in a thin coating of oily substance.

no probably coolant burning off the exhaust......

i say thermostat stuck slightly open causing a little flow but not enough once the car gets real hot. but you need to get in there and start diagnosing, or start pulling it apart, instead of going day to day wondering if its going to run right that day.
